{"id":24690,"date":"2022-11-29T20:15:15","date_gmt":"2022-11-29T20:15:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/c4isrnet\/uncategorized\/2022\/11\/29\/navy-says-us-cruiser-asserted-navigational-rights-in-south-china-sea\/"},"modified":"2026-08-08T05:01:02","modified_gmt":"2026-08-08T05:01:02","slug":"navy-says-us-cruiser-asserted-navigational-rights-in-south-china-sea","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/c4isrnet\/battlefield-tech\/2022\/11\/29\/navy-says-us-cruiser-asserted-navigational-rights-in-south-china-sea\/","title":{"rendered":"Navy says US cruiser \u2018asserted navigational rights\u2019 in South China Sea"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">BEIJING \u2014 The U.S. Navy on Tuesday dismissed Beijing\u2019s protests over a \u201cfreedom of navigation operation\u201d conducted near a Chinese-held island in the South China Sea, in the latest incident drawing new attention to one of the world\u2019s potential military flashpoints.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In an unusual move, the Navy\u2019s 7th Fleet issued a rebuttal to China\u2019s objections to Tuesday\u2019s mission, calling it \u201cthe latest in a long string of [Chinese] actions to misrepresent lawful U.S. maritime operations and assert its excessive and illegitimate maritime claims\u201d in the South China Sea. <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/space-launches-taiwan-science-technology-asia-e8b45f49d3d29851210983d0a399ccba\" target=\"_blank\">China claims the area<\/a> virtually in its entirety.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Navy said that China\u2019s sweeping maritime claims pose a serious <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/russia-ukraine-china-asia-beijing-philippines-2ad93bc67233e987f8ef6d0f32fb2f60\" target=\"_blank\">threat to the freedom of navigation and overflight,<\/a> free trade and unimpeded commerce, and freedom of economic opportunity for South China Sea littoral nations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cAs long as some countries continue to claim and assert limits on rights that exceed their authority under international law, the United States will continue to defend the rights and freedoms of the sea guaranteed to all,\u201d it said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Navy said its guided missile cruiser Chancellorsville on Tuesday \u201casserted navigational rights and freedoms in the South China Sea near the Spratly Islands, consistent with international law.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">China called the action illegal and said it mobilized naval and air assets to issue warnings and drive off the ship.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe U.S. military\u2019s actions have seriously violated China\u2019s sovereignty and security, which is further ironclad evidence of its pursuit of navigational hegemony and militarization of the South China Sea,\u201d spokesperson for the Southern Theater Command, Air Force Col. Tian Junli, was quoted as saying.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cChina has indisputable sovereignty over the South China Sea islands and their adjacent waters,\u201d Tian said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The long-seething South China Sea territorial conflicts involving China, the Philippines, Vietnam, Malaysia, Taiwan and Brunei have long been regarded as a delicate fault line in the U.S.-China rivalry in the region.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">While the U.S. lays no claims to the strategic waterway, where an estimated $5 trillion in global trade transits each year, it has said that freedom of navigation and overflight is in America\u2019s national interest. The sea is also home to rich fishing stocks and a potential wealth of energy and mineral resources.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In March, U.S. Indo-Pacific commander Adm. John C. Aquilino told The Associated Press that China has fully militarized at least three of several islands it built in the disputed waters with anti-ship and anti-aircraft missile systems, laser and jamming equipment. He described it as an increasingly aggressive move that threatens all nations operating nearby.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then in July, U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken called on China to comply with a 2016 arbitration ruling that invalidated Beijing\u2019s vast claims on historical grounds in the South China Sea.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On a visit to the area earlier this month, <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/china-asia-kamala-harris-navy-philippines-3f320a32e9916b4a8b56311319413a87\" target=\"_blank\">U.S. Vice President Kamala Harris<\/a> reaffirmed Washington\u2019s commitment to defend the Philippines under the 1951 Mutual Defense Treaty. She also announced an additional aid of $7.5 million to Philippine maritime law enforcement agencies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That came shortly after the Philippine navy alleged a <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/china-navy-philippines-manila-south-sea-473e3d00ed37f0ad497b809712acf8c5\" target=\"_blank\">Chinese coast guard vessel<\/a> had forcibly seized Chinese rocket
