But they also discussed technical problems that could lead to long-term difficulties.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Here are three areas they highlighted:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><b>Self-driving vehicles<\/b><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe\u2019re just around the corner from a world with no drivers,\u201d said Adm. John Richardson, the chief of naval operations. \u201cMachines are going to be driving us. What are we going to do with the sailors who were trained to drive? We have to be out in front of that problem and get them new skills and the technology to teach them new skills.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Of course, the Navy is no stranger to autonomous vehicles. The Office of Naval Research has experimented with autonomous boats, DARPA has experimented with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.c4isrnet.com\/unmanned\/uas\/2018\/02\/05\/this-unmanned-submarine-chaser-is-closer-to-reality\/\" title=\"\" class=\"\">submarine hunters<\/a>, and there has been plenty of discussion about <a href=\"https:\/\/www.c4isrnet.com\/unmanned\/2017\/11\/06\/the-navy-is-getting-an-extra-large-underwater-drone\/\" title=\"\" class=\"selected-link\">underwater drones<\/a>. In addition, when asked during the panel about major acquisition programs the chiefs had deemed most important, Richardson mentioned the MQ-25 drone, its integration into the air wing and unmanned, undersea vehicles as top priorities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><b>Retaining cyber warriors<\/b><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The size and scope of the cyber workforce with the Department of Defense has been an issue for years. But Gen. Robert Neller, commandant of the Marine Corps, said retaining those workers is paramount if the Defense Department wants to stay on the leading edge of the cyber front.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe\u2019re at the point now, if you make it through all the wickets, and you become a cyber Marine, if you will, and you\u2019re qualified to do mission protection or attack or cyber mission force stuff, you\u2019re not leaving,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cYou\u2019re going to be like [special operations command]. You\u2019re in, you\u2019re doing special missions, you\u2019re done. Because it just doesn\u2019t sense from a business case to invest two years to do something else \u2026 We can\u2019t afford to keep these people. The only thing we can do is \u2018I\u2019m going to leave them alone and let them do their job.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><b>Reliable networks<\/b><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe No. 1 priority is resilient, survivable, reliable command and control,\u201d Neller told the audience. \u201cWe\u2019ve got to be able to protect our networks and deny our adversary theirs. If we can\u2019t do that, we\u2019re in another space and I think that\u2019s going to be a challenge because of the capability sets our peer adversaries are developing.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Neller said he was particularly worried the Marine Corps would not be able to best take advantage of the F-35 and its multitude of sensors because of command-and-control
