If recognize the term quantum computing, you fall within a very small group. There are many that believe this is a new\u00a0technology, \u00a0 That remains the case <\/span>even though the foundation for QC <\/span>and the resulting research dates back to the 1970s.\u00a0Many point to the early 80s when in <\/span>1982, when Richard Feynman, a<\/span> Nobel prize-winning physicist,<\/span> Richard Feynman thought up the idea of a quantum computer (QC).\u2019<\/span> Why the big fuss?\u00a0A quantum computer can solve some problems 100,000,000 times faster than conventional computing methods.!<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Currently the QC market is very limited and there are very few players.\u00a0D-Wave Systems(Link http:\/\/www.dwavesys.com<\/a> ) <\/span>\u00a0has staked their claim that it is the first company to make a commercial quantum computer.\u00a0In 2014, MIT Review reported<\/a> (link http:\/\/www.dwavesys.com<\/a> ) \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0that<\/span> Google had initiated an effort to build its their <\/span>own quantum computer.\u00a0IARPA (Link http:\/\/www.iarpa.gov\/index.php\/research-programs\/quantum-programs-at-iarpa?highlight=WyJxdWFudHVtIiwiY29tcHV0aW5nIiwicXVhbnR1bSBjb21wdXRpbmciXQ<\/a>==)\u00a0 <\/span>\u2014 the intelligence community research arm,<\/span> \u2014 is another major player in the quest to develop QC<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Advances in the field of quantum computing are becoming more regular these days.\u00a0A few months back the University of New South Wales (UNSW) published a piece covering a recent breakthrough in the Journal of Nature.\u00a0This breakthrough was called “a game changer<\/a>.”\u00a0 Here is a link that talks about the breakthrough – <\/span>http:\/\/phys.org\/news\/2015-10-crucial-hurdle-quantum.html<\/span><\/a> .<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The implications of QC on national security are significant. Fundamentally, QC will be able to solve problems that are extremely problematic for even the most advanced computers that are in operation today. That is why the Defense Advanced Research Projects AgencyDARPA<\/span> is also involved.\u00a0There are published reports that the National Security Agency has quantum computer work underway.\u00a0If successful, the application of QC to encryption <\/span>w<\/span><\/span>could allow them<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>agency to break almost any form of encryption.\u00a0The ability to break quantum encryption is still highly questionable.\u00a0For those of you that might be interested, here is a very nice primer on quantum encryption<\/a> – http:\/\/science.howstuffworks.com\/science-vs-myth\/everyday-myths\/quantum-cryptology.htm<\/a><\/span><\/span> that should answer most of your questions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This is another area of technology where the leadership role of the United States is in <\/span>questioned.\u00a0Some say the U.S. is not a leader in quantum computing, with some pointing to Canada, China or and <\/span>Australia as being in the lead<\/span>.\u00a0 How big of a risk do you think that is?\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
