{"id":26413,"date":"2020-03-17T13:12:14","date_gmt":"2020-03-17T13:12:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/c4isrnet\/uncategorized\/2020\/03\/17\/darpa-backed-pandemic-readiness-could-yield-results-by-july\/"},"modified":"2026-08-08T18:13:09","modified_gmt":"2026-08-08T18:13:09","slug":"darpa-backed-pandemic-readiness-could-yield-results-by-july","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/c4isrnet\/coronavirus\/2020\/03\/17\/darpa-backed-pandemic-readiness-could-yield-results-by-july\/","title":{"rendered":"A DARPA program\u2019s role in trying to end pandemics"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">To prepare for the future is to anticipate nightmares.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Starting in 2017, the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency, the Pentagon\u2019s in-house blue sky projects wing, launched the Pandemic Prevention Platform (P3) program, with an explicit goal of creating new medicine to treat a known or novel infection threat within 60 days of that threat being identified, so that the United States <a href=\"https:\/\/www.darpa.mil\/news-events\/2018-02-22\" target=_blank>can<\/a> \u201ckeep the outbreak from escalating and decrease disruptions to the military and homeland.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Now, that P3 program could play a role in ultimately bringing about an end to the disruptions caused by COVID-19.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">These disruptions have impacted the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/news\/coronavirus\/\" target=_blank>military<\/a>, with everything from strained telework resources to canceled exercises to actual infections among servicemembers. And those disruptions are impacting civilian life, too. The CDC <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/coronavirus\/2019-ncov\/community\/large-events\/mass-gatherings-ready-for-covid-19.html\" target=_blank>recommends<\/a> as of March 16, 2020, that in-person events that consist of 10 people or more throughout the United States be canceled or postponed because of the strain that new infections of COVID-19 can put on the existing medical system.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As a rule, DARPA seeks to direct its funding to problems that have not yet been solved by other means, and part of the spark behind the Pandemic Prevention Platform was an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.darpa.mil\/news-events\/2017-02-06a\" target=_blank>acknowledgement<\/a> that, in the face of outbreaks like Zika, H1N1 influenza, and Ebola, \u201cstate-of-the-art medical countermeasures typically take many months or even years to develop, produce, distribute, and administer.\u201d That kind of delay means a solution arrives only after an outbreak.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One of the companies awarded contracts by DARPA was AbCellera, which through the program refined its approach to the discovery and manufacture of antibodies that are most effective against a novel infection.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThrough the P3 program, DARPA has set a bold vision to establish effective response capabilities for viral threats,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.abcellera.com\/news\/18-03-abcellera-awarded-multi-year-contract-to-lead-the-development-of-rapid-response-platform\" target=_blank>said<\/a> Carl Hansen, founding CEO of AbCellera, when DARPA announced that the company had been awarded a contract under the P3 program in March 2018. Hansen cited the danger of the then-recent Ebola and Zika pandemics, saying those outbreaks \u201chave made it clear that we are not equipped to deal with viral pandemics.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">While DARPA projects often anticipate the future, it has been a fast turnaround from anticipating greater pandemics in 2017 and 2018 to tackling one in 2020.
