{"id":27258,"date":"2016-11-25T17:30:00","date_gmt":"2016-11-25T17:30:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/c4isrnet\/uncategorized\/2016\/11\/25\/darpa-envisions-100g-infrastructure-for-improved-data-delivery\/"},"modified":"2026-08-08T18:20:01","modified_gmt":"2026-08-08T18:20:01","slug":"darpa-envisions-100g-infrastructure-for-improved-data-delivery","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/c4isrnet\/it-networks\/2016\/11\/25\/darpa-envisions-100g-infrastructure-for-improved-data-delivery\/","title":{"rendered":"DARPA envisions 100G infrastructure for improved data delivery"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Researchers at the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency say they are making headway on efforts to develop a much more robust wireless communications backbone. <br\/> <br\/><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Phase one testing has confirmed the viability of a 100-gigabit-per-second network, with further development and testing expected to continue into next year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><br\/>For soldiers on the ground, a 100G infrastructure would represent a sizable increase over present wireless capacities. By comparison, wireless links that connect cell towers to fiber operate at between\u00a01G and 10G over short distances. This system would magnify that tenfold at more than 10 times the distance, said Ted Woodward, manager for the 100G program. <br\/> <br\/><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The 100G program is looking at ways to achieve this ultra-high capacity by positioning networking assets at high altitudes, around 60,000 feet, and distributing the network at ranges of 200 km air-to-air and 100 km air-to-ground.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><br\/>They&#8217;ll need to fine tune a number of high-end networking technologies in order to achieve this effect.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><br\/>First, researchers are working with higher-order modulation, a technique for making more efficient use of bandwidth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><br\/>&#8220;By exploiting signal-to-noise ratio to the fullest, we can gain capacity logarithmically, and we do that by transmitting more than one bit of information during a given time interval,&#8221; Woodward said. <br\/><\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Another approach involves line-of-sight spatial multiplexing, which effectively multiplies the capacity of a single channel by a factor proportional to the number of antennas. Ultimately, DARPA wants to combine this technique with high-order modulation to achieve full 100G functionality.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><br\/>These technologies could have significant real-world impact for war fighters who are disconnected from the wired telecommunications environment. In effect, DARPA researchers say they want these deployed soldiers to have connectivity on par with that obtained via high-bandwidth, low-latency fiber-optic networks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><br\/>&#8220;100G attempts to provide the capacity traditionally associated with fixed infrastructure, such as fiber networks, with the mobility we traditionally associate with wireless systems. Today, you can&#8217;t get both of those things at once,&#8221; Woodward said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><br\/>DARPA says it is getting close to that goal, with recent tests showing strong positive results.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><br\/>&#8220;Recent progress included a demonstration of key components performing to levels suitable to meet overall 100G system goals.&#8221; DARPA Director Arati Prabhakar told a House of Representatives subcommittee earlier this year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><br\/>In those trials, &#8220;DARPA performers set several millimeter-wave modulation and transmission records,&#8221; Prabhakar said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><br\/>Since its inception the 100G program has taken its cues from developments on the commercial side. &#8220;We looked at what technology base existed in the commercial and defense sectors,&#8221; Woodward said. &#8220;We were able to leverage prior investments \u2026 such as efficient power amplifiers and apertures.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><br\/>At the same time, the program has been guided by the things DARPA did not see in the commercial marketplace.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><br\/>&#8220;We specifically invested in high-order modulation and spatial multiplexing methods early in the program because the current state-of-the-art did not readily support our needs,&#8221; Woodward said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><br\/>In their investigations, DARPA researchers have found wireless 100G to be inherently problematic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;It comes down to managing signal loss and distortion. It is more difficult to wirelessly send data at high rates over long distances in free space than through optical fibers,&#8221; Woodward said. Atmospheric effects degrade wireless signal. Moisture and turbulence in the air get in the way.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><br\/>&#8220;Fiber is a far more forgiving and low-loss medium, which is why it is so widely used,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Nonetheless, researchers are confident 100G is achievable and they foresee a number of potential uses. High-bandwidth wireless could be used to move large amounts of high-resolution video, for example, or it could be employed in areas where there is a large volume of data traffic and no readily available fixed network infrastructure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><br\/>Phase two testing, now underway, will integrate a number of technologies that have already passed muster to create a single solution. A following phase will flight-test the completed backbone, likely in 2017.
