{"id":27272,"date":"2020-08-05T20:48:56","date_gmt":"2020-08-05T20:48:56","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/c4isrnet\/uncategorized\/2020\/08\/05\/two-us-army-projects-seek-to-improve-comms-between-soldiers-and-ai\/"},"modified":"2026-08-08T18:23:40","modified_gmt":"2026-08-08T18:23:40","slug":"two-us-army-projects-seek-to-improve-comms-between-soldiers-and-ai","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/c4isrnet\/artificial-intelligence\/2020\/08\/05\/two-us-army-projects-seek-to-improve-comms-between-soldiers-and-ai\/","title":{"rendered":"Two US Army projects seek to improve comms between soldiers and AI"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">WASHINGTON \u2014 A pair of artificial intelligence projects from U.S. Army researchers are easing communication barriers that limit the relationship between AI systems and soldiers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The artificial intelligence projects are designed to support ongoing efforts for the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/land\/2019\/12\/23\/congress-injects-millions-to-advance-next-gen-combat-vehicle-technology\/\">Army\u2019s next-generation combat vehicle modernization priority<\/a>, which includes a focus on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.armytimes.com\/news\/your-army\/2019\/10\/20\/from-unmanned-teaming-to-new-capabilities-the-armys-next-generation-combat-vehicle-will-be-a-leap-forward\/\">autonomous vehicles and AI-enabled platforms<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The first project, named the Joint Understanding and Dialogue Interface, or JUDI, is an AI system that can understand the intent of a soldier when that individual gives a robot verbal instructions. The second project, Transparent Multi-Modal Crew Interface Designs, is meant to give soldiers a better understanding of why AI systems make decisions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe\u2019re attacking a similar problem from opposite ends,\u201d said Brandon Perelman, a research psychologist at the Army Research Laboratory who worked on Transparent Multi-Modal Crew Interface Designs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The JUDI system will improve soldiers\u2019 situational awareness when working with robots because it will transform that relationship from a \u201cheads down, hands full\u201d to a \u201cheads up, hands free\u201d interaction, according to Matthew Marge, a computer scientist at the lab. Simply put, \u201cthis means that soldiers will be more aware of their surroundings,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Natural language AI systems are available on the commercial market, but the JUDI system requires a level of awareness in a physical environment that isn\u2019t matched by commercial products. Commercial systems can understand what a person is saying and take instructions, but they don\u2019t know what is going on in the surrounding area. For the Army, the autonomous system needs to know that.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cYou want a robot to be able to process what you\u2019re saying and ground it to the immediate physical context,\u201d Marge said. \u201cSo that means the robot has to not only interpret the speech, but also have a good idea of where it is [in] the world, the mapping of its surroundings, and how it represents those surroundings in a way that can relate to what the soldier is saying.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Researchers looked into how soldiers speak to robots, and how robots talk back. In prior research, Marge found that humans speak to technology in much simpler, direct language; but when talking to other people, they usually talk about a course of action and the steps involved. However, those studies were done in a safe environment, and not a stressful one similar to combat, during which a soldier\u2019s language could be different. That\u2019s an area where Marge knows the Army must perform more research.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWhen a soldier is under pressure, we don\u2019t want to have any limit on the range of words or phrases they have to memorize to speak to the robot,\u201d Marge said. \u201cSo from the beginning, we are taking an approach of so-called natural language. The algorithm finds an instruction from its training data with the highest overlap and sends it to the robot as a command.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The JUDI system, Marge said, is scheduled for field testing in September. JUDI was developed with help from researchers at the University of Southern California\u2019s Institute for Creative Technologies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Transparent Multi-Modal Crew Interface Designs is tackling the AI-human interaction from the other side.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe\u2019re looking at ways of improving the ability of AI to communicate information to the soldier to show the soldier what it\u2019s thinking and what it\u2019s doing so it\u2019s more predictable and trustworthy,\u201d Perelman said. \u201cBecause we know that \u2026 if soldiers don\u2019t understand why the AI is doing something and it fails, they\u2019re not going to trust it. And if they don\u2019t trust it, they\u2019re not going to use it.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mission planning is the one area where the Transparent Multi-Modal Crew Interface Designs may prove useful. Perelman compared the program to driving down the highway while a navigation app responds to changes along a route. A driver may want to stay on the highway for the sake of convenience \u2014 not having to steer through extra turns \u2014 even if it takes a few minutes longer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cYou can imagine a situation during mission planning, for example, where an AI proposes a number of courses of action that you could take, and if it\u2019s not able to accurately communicate how it\u2019s coming up with those decisions, then the soldier is really not going to be able to understand and accurately calculate the trade-offs that it\u2019s taking into account,\u201d Perelman said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He added that through lab testing, the team improved soldiers\u2019 ability to predict the AI\u2019s future mobility actions by 60 percent and allowed the soldiers to decide between multiple courses of actions 40 percent quicker.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The program has transitioned over to the Army Combat Capabilities Development Command\u2019s Ground Vehicle System Center\u2019s Crew Optimization and Augmentation Technologies program. That\u2019s where it will take part in Mission Enabler Technologies-Demonstrators phase 2 field testing.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Researchers are &#8220;attacking a similar
