{"id":27566,"date":"2015-10-22T14:08:43","date_gmt":"2015-10-22T14:08:43","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/c4isrnet\/uncategorized\/2015\/10\/22\/army-tests-anti-uas-gun\/"},"modified":"2026-08-08T18:27:51","modified_gmt":"2026-08-08T18:27:51","slug":"army-tests-anti-uas-gun","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/c4isrnet\/unmanned\/uas\/2015\/10\/22\/army-tests-anti-uas-gun\/","title":{"rendered":"Army tests anti-UAS gun"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>An experimental Army anti-drone gun shot down two unmanned aerial vehicles<span class=\"rte rte-comment\">UAVs<\/span> during a demonstration in August.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The August 19 intercepts, at Yuma Proving Ground, Arizona, occurred at over a kilometer range and about 1,500 meters high, according to an Army news release.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The weapon is part of the Counter-Rocket, Artillery, and Mortar (C-RAM) program, which has opted for a missile-based system Indirect Fire Protection Capability Increment 2 Intercept Program of Record. But guns are being explored for other uses, such as downing UAVs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"700\" height=\"500\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/635811044498123673-size0jpg.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-80567\" srcset=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/635811044498123673-size0jpg.jpg 700w, https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/635811044498123673-size0jpg.jpg?resize=300,214 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span>The operational concept behind the Enhanced Area Protection and Survivability technology is to have a 50mm course-corrected projectile intercept an incoming threat. The warhead has a tantalum-tungsten alloy liner to form forward-propelled penetrators for defeat of rockets, artillery and mortars while steel-body fragments are designed to counter unmanned aerial systems.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span>Photo Credit: U.S. Army illustration<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The gun system &#8220;envisions a 50-mm cannon to launch command-guided interceptors,&#8221; the Army said. &#8220;The system uses a precision tracking radar interferometer as a sensor, a fire control computer, and a radio frequency transmitter and receiver to launch the projectile into an engagement &#8216;basket.'&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The system &#8220;tracks both the incoming threat and interceptor, then computes an ideal trajectory correction for the interceptor to maximize probability of mission success. A thruster on the interceptor\/projectile is used for course correction. The ground station uplinks the maneuver and detonation commands, while receiving downlinked assessment data.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;The interceptor takes the commands and computes the roll orientation and time to execute thruster and warhead detonation. The warhead has a tantalum-tungsten alloy liner to form forward propelled penetrators for defeat of C-RAM targets, and steel body fragments to counter unmanned aerial
