The 2022 report highlights growth in Russian and Chinese on-orbit systems as well as efforts to better organize their military space capabilities<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cEvidence of both nations\u2019 intent to undercut the United States and allied leadership in the space domain can be seen in the growth of combined on-orbit assets of China and Russia, which grew approximately 70% in just two years,\u201d DIA Intelligence Officer for Space and Counterspace John Huth said during a Tuesday press briefing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That expansion of capability follows a 200% combined increase between 2015 and 2018 and reflects a recognition by the two countries of the United States\u2019 reliance on space assets and its role as a leader in the domain.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cAs the number of spacefaring nations grow and counterspace capabilities become more integrated into military operations, the U.S. space posture will be increasingly challenged and on-orbit assets will face new risks,\u201d Huth said. \u201cA secure, stable and accessible space domain is crucial as challenges to the United States and our allies\u2019 space capabilities continue to increase.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Huth noted that because the report was completed before Russia\u2019s invasion of Ukraine, it does not include any details on how Russia <a href=\"https:\/\/www.c4isrnet.com\/battlefield-tech\/space\/2022\/02\/24\/us-space-officials-expect-russia-ukraine-conflict-to-extend-into-space\/\" target=\"_blank\">may be using counterspace capabilities in that conflict<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The report also highlights concerns about the threat of on-orbit debris, stating that the likelihood of collision between \u201cmassive derelict objects\u201d in low Earth orbit is growing and \u201cwill continue to rise until at least 2030.\u201d That threat is exacerbated by anti-satellite testing such as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.c4isrnet.com\/battlefield-tech\/space\/2021\/11\/15\/russia-tests-anti-satellite-weapon-astronauts-take-cover\/\" target=\"_blank\">Russia\u2019s test of an ASAT last November<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cEven if international and national guidelines were made legally binding, mitigation thresholds were made more stringent, or if compliance were even close to 100%, there would still be a formidable debris problem from the remnants of the first 63 years of space operations,\u201d the report states.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The DIA\u2019s survey follows the release of counterspace capability reports from two Washington, DC, think-tanks: Secure World Foundation and the Center for Strategic and International Studies. Those reports pointed to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.c4isrnet.com\/battlefield-tech\/space\/2022\/04\/04\/experts-say-russias-use-of-counterspace-capabilities-could-make-2022-a-pivotal-year-for-space-security\/\" target=\"_blank\">increased counterspace activity<\/a> over the last year, and the CSIS report predicted 2022 could be a \u201cpivotal turning point in space security\u201d due to Russia\u2019s use of counterspace capabilities like GPS jamming and cyber attacks in its war on Ukraine.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>DIA officials characterized the growth in maturity and quantity
