{"id":27848,"date":"2017-07-25T17:25:23","date_gmt":"2017-07-25T17:25:23","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/c4isrnet\/uncategorized\/2017\/07\/25\/is-an-intel-community-reorg-in-the-works\/"},"modified":"2026-08-08T18:20:43","modified_gmt":"2026-08-08T18:20:43","slug":"is-an-intel-community-reorg-in-the-works","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/c4isrnet\/intel-geoint\/2017\/07\/25\/is-an-intel-community-reorg-in-the-works\/","title":{"rendered":"Is an intel community reorg in the works?"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The intelligence community is in the middle of a \u201csignificant transformation process,\u201d according to the community\u2019s top official.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe\u2019re in the beginning of the process of change that I hope will bring us up to date in terms of the agility \u2026 that we need,\u201d Director of National Intelligence Dan Coats said during a Friday appearance at the Aspen Security Forum.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Coats noted that every agency needs to be evaluated in terms of effectiveness and efficiency given that with large bureaucracies duplication occurs and remains, as can be the nature of bureaucracy itself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He added that an internal process is already underway with senior advisory committees to look at how to better provide customers efficiency and effectiveness.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Details on this effort, however, are scant. Coats declined to name the \u201call stars\u201d joining these committees, and a spokesman for the Office of the Director of National Intelligence told C4ISRNET there is nothing further to offer in addition to Coats\u2019 remarks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">[<a href=\"http:\/\/www.c4isrnet.com\/intel-geoint\/2017\/07\/20\/trumps-nominee-for-intel-job-backs-odni-role-in-intelligence-integration\/\">Trump&#8217;s nominee for intel job backs ODNI role in intelligence integration<\/a>]<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Coats did note that the IC is looking at the near term, midterm (as defined as 2025) and the far term (out to the 2040-2050 range) as to how to structure the IC. \u201dStatus quo is not acceptable,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI\u2019ve been there four-plus months we\u2019re just putting the pieces in place now,\u201d Coats said. \u201cWe\u2019ll be rolling that out in the last six months.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There has been criticism that ODNI too large and has become politicized, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/lawmakers-officials-frown-on-donald-trumps-dismissal-of-u-s-intelligence-1483554450\">reporting by The Wall Street Journal<\/a>. There was some discussion of doing away with the position, which oversees and coordinates the efforts of the other 16 intelligence agencies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sue Gordon, who currently serves as deputy director of the National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency, was recently tapped to serve as principal deputy director of national intelligence. Gordon admitted during her <a href=\"http:\/\/www.c4isrnet.com\/intel-geoint\/2017\/07\/20\/trumps-nominee-for-intel-job-backs-odni-role-in-intelligence-integration\/\">confirmation hearing last week<\/a> that many are concerned about the IC growing too big and sucking up too many responsibilities. She said that Coats is committed to examining this and has suggested to her that this could be a special opportunity she\u2019ll have to lead if
