As of last year, the satellites in the DMSP constellation were reaching the end of their service life, and the Pentagon expressed concerns that they may not last until a new satellite is launched in 2024.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">ORS-8, a planned replacement slated to launch in 2020 in partnership with NASA, was canceled by the space agency following protests. A free-flying spacecraft that could help provide weather data in the interim was scrapped by the Pentagon last year in favor of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.c4isrnet.com\/battlefield-tech\/space\/2019\/09\/19\/how-will-the-air-force-get-the-weather-data-it-needs-from-space\/\" target=_blank>a distributed low-Earth orbit architecture<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/c4isrnet\/space\/2020\/05\/19\/new-military-weather-satellite-passes-key-milestones\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"190\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/200518-F-ZZ999-101.JPG.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">New military weather satellite passes key milestones<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">The Weather System Follow-on\u2014Microwave will provide critical space-based weather data for the U.S. military.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Raytheon says it can design the new satellite in eight months by leveraging weather system technology used on the Visible Infrared Imaging Radiometer Suite and Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer. Raytheon did not disclose the prototype contract value.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cOur system will gather all the info needed to not only build an accurate weather forecast, but to really understand what\u2019s going on in the atmosphere \u2014 both of which are essential to planning and executing a mission,\u201d said Wallis Laughrey, vice president of space and command-and-control systems at Raytheon Intelligence &amp; Space. \u201cUnderstanding clouds and cloud movement could be used for things as simple as route planning for air-to-air refueling or to know
