{"id":28046,"date":"2018-02-05T19:07:34","date_gmt":"2018-02-05T19:07:34","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/c4isrnet\/uncategorized\/2018\/02\/05\/this-unmanned-submarine-chaser-is-closer-to-reality\/"},"modified":"2026-08-08T18:20:47","modified_gmt":"2026-08-08T18:20:47","slug":"this-unmanned-submarine-chaser-is-closer-to-reality","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/c4isrnet\/unmanned\/uas\/2018\/02\/05\/this-unmanned-submarine-chaser-is-closer-to-reality\/","title":{"rendered":"This unmanned submarine chaser is closer to reality"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) has successfully completed its part in a project to develop a highly-autonomous submarine hunting drone ship, dubbed the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.navytimes.com\/news\/your-navy\/2016\/04\/08\/meet-the-navy-s-new-sub-hunting-drone-ship\/\" title=\"\" class=\"\" style=\"\" target=\"_blank\">Sea Hunter<\/a>, according to a Jan. 30 press release from the agency.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The vessel is able to travel thousands of miles over open seas, for months at a time, without a crew member on board.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The DARPA prototype now will be transferred to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/news\/your-military\/2017\/01\/13\/naval-research-seeks-to-tackle-traumatic-brain-injury\/\" title=\"\" class=\"\" target=\"_blank\">Office of Naval Research<\/a> to continue development, which the Department of Defense hopes could lead to an entirely new class of unmanned surface vehicles, or USVs. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The partnership program from DARPA and the Office of Naval Research, or ONR, began in September 2014 as the Anti-Submarine Warfare Continuous Trail Unmanned Vessel (ACTUV) and will now continue under a new name, the Medium Displacement Unmanned Surface Vehicle (MDUSV). The technology it ultimately develops could offer an important glimpse into the future of warfare.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/wqb4xzhd40w\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"autoplay; encrypted-media\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cACTUV\u2019s move from DARPA to ONR marks a significant milestone in developing large-scale USV technology and autonomy capabilities,\u201d said Alexander Walan, a program manager in DARPA\u2019s Tactical Technology Office. \u201cOur collaboration with ONR has brought closer to reality a future fleet in which both manned warships and capable large unmanned vessels complement each other to accomplish diverse, evolving missions.\u201d<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Equipped with a powerful active sonar, the Sea Hunter can track down diesel submarines, whose stealthy engines can make them difficult to detect. The 132-foot-long robot warship, however, was not designed to carry weaponry. If an adversarial sub is detected, the 27-knot Sea Hunter would shadow the target while armed platforms are called into destroy it. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The ONR is now planning additional at-sea tests for the technology, including automating payload and sensor data processing, developing mission-specific autonomous features, and exploring autonomous coordination among multiple USVs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Depending on the results of those tests, the Sea Hunter could transition to U.S. Navy operations later this
