{"id":28630,"date":"2022-02-10T15:15:23","date_gmt":"2022-02-10T15:15:23","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/c4isrnet\/uncategorized\/2022\/02\/10\/new-space-modeling-and-sim-environment-to-boost-cooperation-between-scientists-and-force-designers\/"},"modified":"2026-08-08T18:29:28","modified_gmt":"2026-08-08T18:29:28","slug":"new-space-modeling-and-sim-environment-to-boost-cooperation-between-scientists-and-force-designers","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/c4isrnet\/battlefield-tech\/2022\/02\/10\/new-space-modeling-and-sim-environment-to-boost-cooperation-between-scientists-and-force-designers\/","title":{"rendered":"New space modeling and sim environment to boost cooperation between scientists and force designers"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">WASHINGTON \u2014 Space Force design architects and science and technology professionals will soon sit side-by-side in a new collaborative modeling and simulation environment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The new workspace is meant to strengthen the partnership between the Air Force Research Laboratory and the Space Warfighting Analysis Center (SWAC), <a href=\"https:\/\/www.c4isrnet.com\/2022\/01\/19\/us-space-force-wants-funding-for-a-new-mission-tracking-ground-targets\/\" target=\"_blank\">a new force design organization that is conducting analysis <\/a>of the service\u2019s major mission area architectures.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Col. Eric Felt \u2014 who currently leads AFRL\u2019s Space Vehicles Directorate but will <a href=\"https:\/\/www.c4isrnet.com\/2022\/01\/18\/head-of-us-air-forces-space-research-will-help-designing-the-space-forces-satellite-constellations\/\" target=\"_blank\">take a new role<\/a> as deputy executive director of the U.S. Space Force\u2019s Architecture, Science and Technology directorate in July \u2014 told C4ISRNET in a recent interview the move will allow the two organizations to work more closely together in a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.c4isrnet.com\/battlefield-tech\/space\/2021\/05\/06\/space-force-wants-to-be-the-worlds-first-fully-digital-service\/\" target=\"_blank\">digital engineering environment<\/a> as they \u201canalyze and optimize\u201d the SWAC\u2019s force designs.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/c4isrnet\/battlefield-tech\/2022\/01\/19\/us-space-force-wants-funding-for-a-new-mission-tracking-ground-targets\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/51400927023_2798132cd0_k.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">US Space Force wants funding for a new mission \u2014 tracking ground targets<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">The ongoing, SWAC-led analysis is weighing options for a space-based GMTI program that could be funded as soon as fiscal 2024.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The modeling and simulation space is expected to be up and running in April and will be housed in a new addition to an Space Vehicles Directorate facility at Kirtland Air Force Base, NM, according to Felt. It comes online about a year before a new <a href=\"https:\/\/www.c4isrnet.com\/battlefield-tech\/space\/2021\/09\/16\/air-force-begins-construction-of-simulation-and-wargaming-facility-for-space-and-lasers\/\" target=\"_blank\">Wargaming and Advanced Research Simulation Laboratory<\/a> is set to open at Kirtland. The new WARS lab will provide the Space Vehicles Directorate and the Directed Energy Directorate a dedicated analysis and simulation facility. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The SWAC completed its <a href=\"https:\/\/www.c4isrnet.com\/battlefield-tech\/space\/2021\/09\/21\/space-enterprise-more-unified-than-ever-says-space-force-chief\/\" target=\"_blank\">first force design last summer<\/a> and in late October briefed industry on its analysis, which was focused on the Department of Defense\u2019s missile warning and tracking architecture. The results haven\u2019t been released, but the work is expected to drive near- and long-term changes to the Department of Defense\u2019s plans for space-based missile defense.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Since finishing its initial architecture work, the center has announced plans to begin its next wave of analysis, which will focus on ground moving target indicator and space data transport capabilities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Felt said the lab and the analysis center have already developed a collaborative relationship and were in close communication as the SWAC developed its missile warning and tracking force design. AFRL can also weigh in with ideas on the back end, offering solutions for mitigating risks identified in the architecture.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe are able to inject our knowledge into their analysis, so that they can evaluate these emerging technologies,\u201d he said. \u201cWe are their art-of-the-possible people.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The relationship also benefits AFRL, Felt said, as it provides clear feedback on how the lab should prioritize and shape its technology portfolio.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That process of identifying where the Space Vehicles Directorate should focus its resources is one that Felt and his eight mission area leads undertake on a yearly basis \u2014 and more regularly as needed. The team uses a cost versus utility plot to identify projects that land in the sweet spot of offering the most potential of deterring adversaries (China, specifically) at the lowest cost. Felt then takes those ideas and publishes them in a commander\u2019s intent report that\u2019s released each June.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The directorate\u2019s current priorities mostly fall into three broad categories based on the Space Force\u2019s current needs and the threats environment: ubiquitous connectivity, ubiquitous sensing and novel orbits. The technology areas aren\u2019t necessarily new, Felt said, but they continue to be areas of importance and \u2014 in the directorate\u2019s view \u2014 \u201cthe biggest contributors to resiliency from a science and technology perspective.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ubiquitous connectivity, Felt explained, includes technology like space-to-ground links and laser communications that allow satellites to continuously communicate with one another and with users on the ground.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe need to be able to talk to our satellites at all times and get data off of them in real time, command then in real time,\u201d he said. \u201cIt\u2019s kind of building the combat cloud, as we used to call it \u2014 the internet in space.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ubiquitous sensing, another high-payoff technology area, involves the sensors that give space operators the domain awareness they need. That includes emerging commercial sensing capabilities and new technologies that \u201chelp small satellites act like big satellites,\u201d Felt said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWhat we really want is to be able to sense everything, everywhere, all the time, in real time,\u201d Felt said. \u201cThat\u2019s the vision of what we want to be able to do with these sensors.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The third focus area, which deals with how to operate in non-traditional orbits, is a new thrust for the lab that looks to use emerging technologies to give the Space Force greater access to areas of space in which it hasn\u2019t traditionally operated. Felt specifically pointed to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.c4isrnet.com\/battlefield-tech\/space\/2020\/09\/22\/space-force-and-nasa-focused-on-cislunar-space-in-new-agreement\/\" target=\"_blank\">cislunar space<\/a> and very low Earth orbit as two regimes of interest.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cFrom a technology point of view, I just want to open up everything . . . so the Space
