SAN DIEGO \u2014 For years, national security and military officials have trumpeted the looming threat China poses to the U.S.-led global order.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For just as many years, polls have shown<\/a> that foreign policy issues rank low on the average voter\u2019s list of pressing concerns.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But the appearance Feb. 1 of the Chinese surveillance balloon<\/a> that sallied its way across U.S. airspace before being shot down off South Carolina is \u201cabsolutely\u201d waking up regular Americans to the Chinese government\u2019s threat to world order, the Navy\u2019s top intelligence official said Wednesday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At the same time, Rear Adm. Michael Studeman, the head of the Office of Naval Intelligence, said he wished the incident \u201cwould be connected to the larger issues at hand when we talk about China.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Any China hand knows Beijing uses \u201c10,000 ways\u201d to conduct espionage and \u201cpenetrate our society,\u201d Studeman said at the annual West naval conference here.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But with the balloon\u2019s emergence earlier this month, Americans \u201cactually get to see it, to believe it, to understand what the nature of the threat is,\u201d he said in response to a Navy Times reporter\u2019s question.<\/p>\n\n\n\t
