{"id":29026,"date":"2023-01-03T23:16:47","date_gmt":"2023-01-03T23:16:47","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/c4isrnet\/uncategorized\/2023\/01\/03\/new-in-2023-here-comes-the-first-ever-surface-drone-fleet\/"},"modified":"2026-08-08T19:45:13","modified_gmt":"2026-08-08T19:45:13","slug":"new-in-2023-here-comes-the-first-ever-surface-drone-fleet","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/c4isrnet\/unmanned\/2023\/01\/03\/new-in-2023-here-comes-the-first-ever-surface-drone-fleet\/","title":{"rendered":"New in 2023: Here comes the first-ever surface drone fleet"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Send in the sea drones!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Er, or the \u201cunmanned surface vehicles,\u201d in the preferred Big Navy nomenclature.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Either way, 2023 should see the sea service stand up its first ever unmanned surface fleet by the end of the summer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">While the Navy and the U.S. military in general spent much of 2022 focused on the European theater following Russia\u2019s invasion of Ukraine, not to mention the whole China situation, the Navy\u2019s drone arm has been quietly hard at work in the Middle Eastern waters of U.S. 5th Fleet testing and developing all types of drone platforms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Task Force 59, stood up in September 2021 to oversee the effort, has in roughly the past year operated surface drones in area waters for more than 25,000 hours, and the Saildrone Explorer in particular logged 220 consecutive days at sea with no refueling or maintenance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe pace of innovation is amazing,\u201d Capt. Michael Brasseur, TF 59\u2032s commander, said in a statement. \u201cWe are challenging our industry partners in one of the most difficult operational environments, and they are responding with enhanced capability, fast.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Fifth Fleet held a three-week unmanned and artificial intelligence integration event called Digital Horizon in November, which <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cusnc.navy.mil\/Media\/News\/Display\/Article\/3226901\/us-launches-new-unmanned-ai-systems-integration-event\/\" target=\"_blank\">a command press release<\/a> billed as a crucial step to integrating new drones ahead of the unmanned surface vessel fleet\u2019s standing up next summer.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/defensenews\/naval\/2022\/10\/13\/navy-boosting-usv-presence-network-capability-in-middle-east\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"168\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/7429433.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">Navy boosting USV presence, network capability in Middle East<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">The Navy will have 20 unmanned boats in the theater and expects regional partners to contribute 80 more to create a maritime domain awareness network.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Such efforts seek to improve what the U.S. and partner navies can see above, below and on the surface of the water.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cBy harnessing these new unmanned technologies and combining them with artificial intelligence, we will enhance regional maritime security and strengthen deterrence,\u201d Vice Adm. Brad Cooper, 5th Fleet\u2019s commander, said in a statement. \u201cThis benefits everybody.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Digital Horizon exercise in November involved 15 different systems, 10 of which were operating among 5th Fleet for the first time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The event involved two unmanned vertical take-off and landing systems, as
