(AP) \u2014 As Spot, Boston Dynamics\u2019 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.armytimes.com\/land\/2019\/05\/10\/dirty-work-robots-take-on-complex-breach-as-army-evaluates-potential\/\" target=\"_blank\">dog-like quadruped robot<\/a>, nimbly paced its way across rocky terrain, a large unmanned aerial vehicle silently hovered 100 feet overhead.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In the distance, a pair of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.armytimes.com\/land\/2022\/06\/23\/lawmakers-say-the-us-army-lacks-a-plan-to-modernize-its-apache-helo\/\" target=\"_blank\">AH-64 Apache helicopters<\/a> could be seen orbiting above the ridgeline. Somewhere in the forest below, 220 soldiers from the elite 101st Airborne Division, who had been airlifted to three onsite landing zones, were taking part in a training scenario. Their mission: Locate and destroy an enemy\u2019s air defense system.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">DIRT Days 23 was in full swing April 20 at the Fola Experimentation Facility, a former Consol Energy surface mine complex that produced 105 million tons of coal before closing in 2012. Later repurposed as a military training site by the West Virginia National Guard, the site is now operated in partnership with the Civil-Military Innovation Institute, or CMI2, a nonprofit based in Morgantown.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The weeklong Driving Innovation in Realistic Training event aimed to involve soldiers in developing and field-testing new tactics and technology while taking part in challenging, realistic training exercises. An initial DIRT Days event took place at the Fola site last summer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cDIRT Days is all about soldier-driven innovation,\u201d said Mitch Kusmier, a vice president at CMI2 and a colonel in the Army Reserve.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe curate the problems soldiers encounter with equipment in the field and then team up with WVU, the Army Research Laboratory and other partners to come up with solutions that are field-tested and proven to work,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The idea is to avoid sending <a href=\"https:\/\/www.armytimes.com\/digital-show-dailies\/ausa\/2022\/10\/09\/us-army-on-track-to-field-24-systems-in-fy23-in-bid-for-a-modern-force\/\" target=\"_blank\">newly designed technology and equipment<\/a> into the field without input from the people who will be using it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWhen I was in Iraq, sometimes a container would show up full of gear designed to solve problems we didn\u2019t know we had,\u201d Kusmier said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Retired Maj. Gen. Robert Faison\/Army)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Among gear being field tested at Fola last week was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.armytimes.com\/news\/your-marine-corps\/2021\/07\/27\/marines-finally-getting-a-realistic-force-on-force-shooter-for-combat-training\/\" target=\"_blank\">Saab\u2019s Force-on-Force Training System-Next<\/a>, in which soldiers wear laser-activated, sensor-equipped vests during simulated enemy actions to allow their movements and actions to be monitored and recorded for post-exercise critiquing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe love Fola,\u201d said David Rees, director of training at Saab\u2019s defense and security division. \u201cYou have a huge, open piece of terrain as well all these steep slopes and wooded areas. It\u2019s a very unique and challenging site for training and testing.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Other gear being tested last week included:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u2666 An <a href=\"https:\/\/www.c4isrnet.com\/battlefield-tech\/it-networks\/2020\/10\/23\/us-army-makes-breakthroughs-on-future-network-tools\/\" target=\"_blank\">Advanced Dynamic Spectrum Reconnaissance<\/a> system, developed at Vanderbilt University, that integrates and automatically tunes legacy Army radios to accommodate the operation of remote sensor networks for detecting enemy presence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u2666 A Mobile Immediate Need Engineering Resource, or MINER, unit \u2014 a containerized, self-powered shop structure equipped with 3-D printers and assorted tools to repair gear in the field.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u2666 A new soldier-created <a href=\"https:\/\/www.c4isrnet.com\/battlefield-tech\/2023\/04\/25\/how-101st-airborne-soldiers-are-using-eaglewerx-makerspace-to-innovate\/\" target=\"_blank\">machine gun ammunition bag<\/a> system designed to replace the practice of cramming belts of ammo into standard rucksacks, often making them difficult to balance and slow to unload.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The new ammo bag, designed to serve M240 machine guns and nearing the production stage, may be low-tech, but it \u201ccan almost cut in half the time it takes to get a gun on a tripod and ready to fire,\u201d said Lt. Col. identify technology we want to be developed.\u201d As a site for training exercises, Fola provides a terrain mix that \u201ccan\u2019t be replicated at Fort Campbell,\u201d the 101st Airborne\u2019s home base in Kentucky, he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In addition to the 220 soldiers from the 101st Airborne, an additional 80 or so troops from the 82nd Airborne Division took
