We will not let those who have exploited our defenders go unpunished,\u201d VVA national president J<a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/2016\/09\/13\/advocates-lawmakers-push-for-answers-to-problem-of-bad-paper-discharges\/\" target=_blank>ohn Rowan<\/a> said in a statement. \u201cMonetizing our service members by sharing their personal information for profit while compromising their identities is despicable and damaging to our national defense.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/militarytimes\/news\/pentagon-congress\/2019\/09\/17\/overseas-trolls-targeting-veterans-on-social-media-report\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/5632287.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">Overseas trolls targeting veterans on social media: Report<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">The overseas agitators are impersonating veterans groups in an effort to confuse and divide the community, investigators found.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At issue are online databases the military has been operating since 1985 which allow private businesses to verify troops\u2019 military status for eligibility in Servicemembers Civil Relief Act protections. That law provides financial relief from certain bills and obligations while troops are deployed or mobilized to active duty.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">However, VVA officials charge that as the databases evolved into web sites over the years, the personal information of troops and veterans became \u201ceasily accessible on the internet to anybody at all, anonymously, for any purpose.\u201d Attorneys argued in federal court in New York that the department should have been more active in safeguarding the information.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Under the terms of the settlement, the department will now require all users of the sites to register before accessing any information and more clearly outline the potential criminal penalties for anyone abusing the information.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Companies seeking to access military status will also be able to do so without entering individuals\u2019 Social Security numbers, in an effort to cut down on sharing of that personal identifier.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Defense officials have also promised to more closely monitor use of the databases to identify patterns of possible misuse or abuse. That includes a quarterly report of all database users and any suspended or terminated accounts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Defense Department did not face any fines or monetary damages under the terms of the settlement.<\/p>\n\n\n<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link smg-interstitial-link--fallback wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/news\/your-navy\/2015\/07\/09\/opm-hack-hit-potentially-millions-of-troops-vets\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__fallback-link\">OPM hack hit potentially millions of troops, vets<\/a><\/aside>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The lawsuit, originally filed in 2017, was handled by attorneys at the Civil Liberties and Transparency Clinic of the University at Buffalo School of Law.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe government has a duty to veterans and service members to safeguard their privacy and to ensure that it is not leaving sensitive information unsecured,\u201d said Jonathan Manes, supervising attorney at the clinic. \u201cIn this case, the government violated that duty.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIt should not have required a lawsuit to address this problem, but we are pleased the government came to the table with VVA to fix
