In 2012, Facebook approached Voxer about a potential collaboration that led to Voxer sharing its patents and proprietary information with the company.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWhen early meetings did not result in an agreement, Facebook identified Voxer as a competitor although Facebook had no live video or voice product at the time,\u201d court filings read. \u201cFacebook revoked Voxer\u2019s access to key components of the Facebook platform and launched Facebook Live in 2015 followed by Instagram Live in 2016. Both products incorporate Voxer\u2019s technologies and infringe its patents.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A Meta spokesperson challenged the ruling in a statement sent to <a href=\"https:\/\/techcrunch.com\/2022\/09\/22\/meta-pay-walkie-talkie-app-maker-voxer-175m-patent-infringement\/\" target=\"_blank\">technology publication TechCrunch<\/a>, saying the social media giant will continue to press the issue through the courts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe believe the evidence at trial demonstrated that Meta did not infringe Voxer\u2019s patents,\u201d Meta\u2019s spokesperson said in the statement. \u201cWe intend to seek further relief, including filing an appeal.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Tom Katis, founder and former Voxer executive, started the company due to what he called a \u201cfrustration with military communications\u201d in an interview with Bloomberg.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Enlisting after the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks, Katis served as communications sergeant with U.S. Army Special Forces.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/player.vimeo.com\/video\/82119419?h=2904aea92c&amp;app_id=122963\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"autoplay; fullscreen; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen title=\"Tom Katis on Bloomberg West\"><\/iframe>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In 2003, his unit was ambushed, and he said he felt the pressing need for better communication capabilities while he was trying to coordinate medevacs and reinforcements, according to Katis\u2019 introduction in the initial complaint.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe military radios we had were the best in the world, but trying to communicate effectively was always a challenge,\u201d Katis said. \u201cFor years after coming back&#8230;I kept trying to figure out how you could build something better, how you could use software to solve some of these problems.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Texas jury found that Facebook Live and Instagram Live incorporated two pieces of Voxer\u2019s technologies that involve streaming media over networks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Meta countered in court filings that \u201cFacebook has prioritized live video messaging since the launch of Facebook Live and Instagram Live, with one report identifying Facebook Live as Facebook\u2019s \u2018top
