{"id":30660,"date":"2024-01-24T16:26:11","date_gmt":"2024-01-24T16:26:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/c4isrnet\/uncategorized\/2024\/01\/24\/new-thermal-optic-shows-bullets-in-flight-details-a-mile-away\/"},"modified":"2026-08-08T15:16:37","modified_gmt":"2026-08-08T15:16:37","slug":"new-thermal-optic-shows-bullets-in-flight-details-a-mile-away","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/c4isrnet\/battlefield-tech\/2024\/01\/24\/new-thermal-optic-shows-bullets-in-flight-details-a-mile-away\/","title":{"rendered":"New thermal optic shows bullets in flight, details a mile away"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">LAS VEGAS \u2014 The distances that military snipers shoot with new combinations of rifles and calibers require optics that see farther and with more clarity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A new add-on device, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.flir.com\/news-center\/military\/teledyne-flir-defense-unveils-advanced-thermal-weapon\/\" target=\"_blank\">ThermoSight HISS-HD<\/a>, a long-range cooled thermal <a href=\"https:\/\/www.armytimes.com\/news\/your-army\/2022\/03\/30\/squad-level-sniper-rifle-to-complete-fielding-by-next-year\/\" target=\"_blank\">sniper <\/a>and machine gun sight by Teledyne FLIR, offers high-resolution views at 2,200 meters, or more than 7,000 feet, and the ability to see the shooter\u2019s bullet in flight even without tracers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Teledyne FLIR debuted this new optic at the annual Shooting, Hunting, Outdoor Trade (SHOT) Show this week.<\/p>\n\n\n<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link smg-interstitial-link--fallback wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?time_continue=5&#038;v=WlPYRJ0zhWo&#038;embeds_referring_euri=https%3A%2F%2Ffragoutmag.com%2Fteledyne-flir-defense-unveils-thermosight-hiss-hd-advanced-thermal-weapon-sight%2F&#038;source_ve_path=MzY4NDIsMjg2NjQsMjg2NjY&#038;feature=emb_logo\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__fallback-link\">New HISS-HD Thermal Sniper Sight by Teledyne FLIR<\/a><\/aside>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Zack Fuller, senior manager for weapon sights and handhelds with the company spoke with Military Times for SHOT Show this year about the device.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Fuller served a decade in special forces, four years as a sniper with the U.S. Army\u2019s 5th Special Forces Group and another four years at the U.S. Army Special Operations Command Science and Technology Department working on visual augmentation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<iframe width=\"315\" height=\"560\"\nsrc=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/xZRuixdMkfg\"\ntitle=\"YouTube video player\"\nframeborder=\"0\"\nallow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\"\nallowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The HISS-HD is a clip-on thermal sight that fits in front of the existing weapon optic. (Teledyne FLIR)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The sight offers four times the resolution and clarity of existing thermal sights. (Teledyne FLIR)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">With those features, Fuller said the sight triples the performance for machine gun sights and doubles it when compared to existing thermal sights designed for sniper rifles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The optic weighs 4.6 pounds with batteries and measures 10.6 inches long by 3.5 inches wide and 3.7 inches high.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">With the MIL-1913 mount, it fits the Picatinny rail system. The optic has digital video recording features and uses a CR123 battery with a three hour runtime, according to data provided by the
