One of those capabilities is securing control systems aboard the vessels.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/c4isrnet\/home\/2018\/04\/30\/push-button-captains-in-the-navy-now-one-step-closer-to-reality\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"157\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/hearing_jowers_0214.png.png?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">\u2018Push button\u2019 captains in the Navy now one step closer to reality<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">The House Armed Services Personnel Subcommittee has included a proposal to allow military services the ability to directly commission highly skills cyber and scientific officers up to the rank of O-6.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cCybersecurity vulnerabilities could potentially lead to hackers disabling or taking control of systems, preventing the EFP vessel from accomplishing its missions,\u201d the report said. \u201cAccording to a DoD cybersecurity instruction, if cybersecurity risk management is not adequately addressed during the initiation, development, and acquisition phases of the system development life cycle, these tasks will be undertaken later in the life cycle and will be more costly and time consuming to implement.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The report also highlighted 14 unresolved information assurance control deficiencies related to \u201cthe availability, integrity, authenticity, and confidentiality of information exchanges.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/c4isrnet\/it-networks\/2018\/04\/27\/darpa-wants-to-arm-ethical-hackers-with-ai\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/hacker-team.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">DARPA wants to arm ethical hackers with AI<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">The Pentagon&#039;s technology agency seeks artificial intelligence tools to help expand vulnerability testing of its networks.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">According to the Inspector General, Space and Naval Warfare Systems Command corrected 11 information assurance control deficiencies identified during the initial operational test and evaluation and follow-on operational test and evaluation, which were confirmed as corrected by the Military Sealift Command. The MSC is responsible for the operation and sustainment of the EPF vessel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Network and information security continues to emerge in importance both ashore and afloat, with top officials from the Navy\u2019s cyber elements emphasizing the need to secure onboard systems in particular. It\u2019s an idea that was underscored in the Navy\u2019s investigations into the 2017 collisions of the USS John McCain and the USS Fitzgerald, in which the Navy brought in teams from Space and Naval Warfare Systems Command and Fleet Cyber Command\/Tenth Fleet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe role that SPAWAR played is important in the sense that we played a role, and that\u2019s an indicator of the new reality of today, where our systems across the board are reliant on the network,\u201d Rear Adm. Christian Becker, SPAWAR commander, told C4ISRNET in a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.c4isrnet.com\/it-networks\/2018\/02\/12\/five-questions-with-the-head-of-the-space-and-naval-systems-command\/\" title=\"\" class=\"\" target=\"_blank\">recent interview<\/a>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Becker emphasized cyber resiliency throughout the fleet. \u201cThat starts with designing in that resiliency from the beginning, implementing IT standards, and making sure that when we deliver the capability for which we\u2019re responsible, those capabilities are up-to-date, integrated
