{"id":31752,"date":"2023-06-05T20:44:51","date_gmt":"2023-06-05T20:44:51","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/c4isrnet\/uncategorized\/2023\/06\/05\/us-space-force-taps-l3harris-to-design-missile-tracking-sensor\/"},"modified":"2026-08-08T18:39:21","modified_gmt":"2026-08-08T18:39:21","slug":"us-space-force-taps-l3harris-to-design-missile-tracking-sensor","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/c4isrnet\/space\/2023\/06\/05\/us-space-force-taps-l3harris-to-design-missile-tracking-sensor\/","title":{"rendered":"US Space Force taps L3Harris to design missile-tracking sensor"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">WASHINGTON \u2014 The U.S. Space Force awarded L3Harris Technologies <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ssc.spaceforce.mil\/Portals\/3\/Documents\/PRESS%20RELEASES\/Space%20Systems%20Command%20awards%20its%20third%20contract%20for%20MEO%20Epoch%201%20Resilient%20MW-MT%20satellite%20program.pdf?ver=07U59G1d_0OGCbYDjT_90Q%3d%3d\" target=\"_blank\">a $29 million contract<\/a> to design a sensor for the service\u2019s planned Resilient Missile Warning and Tracking satellite constellation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.c4isrnet.com\/battlefield-tech\/space\/2023\/01\/06\/raytheon-millennium-get-more-funding-for-missile-tracking-satellites\/\" target=\"_blank\">Millennium Space Systems and Raytheon Technologies are already on contract<\/a> to develop sensor prototypes for the satellites, which will reside in medium Earth orbit \u2014 between 1,200 miles and 22,000 miles above the planet. According to the program\u2019s senior materiel leader, selecting L3Harris to design a third sensor as part of the program\u2019s first phase, or \u201cEpoch,\u201d broadens the Space Force\u2019s industry team, giving the service <a href=\"https:\/\/www.c4isrnet.com\/battlefield-tech\/space\/2023\/04\/03\/space-force-fleshing-out-second-phase-of-missile-tracking-program\/\" target=\"_blank\">more options as the constellation grows<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cAdding a third vendor reduces risk and non-recurring engineering not only for Epoch 1, but for future Epochs as well,\u201d Col. Heather Bogstie said in a June 5 statement. \u201cHaving another payload option opens the trade space and allows us to take advantage of all industry has to offer as we deliver high-quality capability to the warfighter.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The program is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.c4isrnet.com\/battlefield-tech\/space\/2022\/04\/19\/space-force-budget-presents-a-bridge-strategy-for-missile-warning-tracking-architecture\/\">one component of the Space Force\u2019s plan<\/a> to strengthen its missile-warning and -tracking capabilities against growing threats from China and Russia by launching satellites to medium and low Earth orbit, or up to 1,200 miles above the planet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Today, missile warning spacecraft mostly reside in geosynchronous orbit, about 22,000 miles away. Satellites located at medium Earth orbit \u2014 between the low and geosynchronous Earth orbits \u2014 can observe large areas without requiring the same level of complexity from sensors positioned farther from the planet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The first spacecraft are slated to launch in 2026, and the Space Force expects to have four medium-Earth orbit satellites on orbit by 2028 with a goal of fielding technology upgrades on a three-year cycle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The service requested $538 million for medium-Earth orbit tracking satellites in fiscal 2024 to support Epoch 1. According to budget documents, the Space Force expects it will need $3.5 billion for the effort from FY24 through FY28.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The budget documents indicate the service plans to buy six satellites from Millennium, a Boeing subsidiary, and three from Raytheon for the program\u2019s first phase. According to the June 5 news release, the service may buy up to three L3Harris satellites in Epoch 1.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Col. Brian Denaro, Space Systems Command\u2019s program executive officer for space sensing, told C4ISRNET in April the service will <a href=\"https:\/\/www.c4isrnet.com\/battlefield-tech\/space\/2023\/04\/28\/how-three-space-agencies-are-collaborating-on-next-gen-missile-warning\/\" target=\"_blank\">review each company\u2019s final designs this fall<\/a>, and at that point will determine whether to add a third sensor to the mix for Epoch 1.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He noted the Space Force hasn\u2019t solidified how many satellites it will include in Epoch 1, partly because it\u2019s still evaluating options.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIt really depends on what altitude they\u2019re at, what technology you have, the size of their sensor,\u201d he said. \u201cI would say that each vendor comes in with a different way to solve the problem, which creates an interesting
