But that gap could potentially harm U.S. national security. Jeff Martin takes an in-depth look at the problem \u2013 and how to fix it.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Google may no longer be providing artificial intelligence to the Pentagon under <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/home\/2018\/03\/07\/google-is-helping-the-pentagon-learn-how-to-analyze-drone-footage\/\" target=\"_blank\">Project Maven<\/a>, but the Silicon Valley company is moving ahead on other efforts that could ultimately support military operations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In interviews March 9, DARPA Director Steve Walker and Vint Cerf, Google\u2019s vice president and chief internet evangelist, pointed to projects already underway that bring together the Pentagon\u2019s top innovation hub and Silicon Valley\u2019s tech giant.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And yes, some involve artificial intelligence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cDARPA has been investing for about 56 of our 61 years in AI,&#8221; Walker said during an interview with C4ISRNET sister brand Defense News. In September, agency leaders <a href=\"https:\/\/www.c4isrnet.com\/it-networks\/2018\/09\/10\/darpas-new-2-billion-initiative-for-next-level-ai\/\" target=_blank>announced AI Next \u2013 an effort that will filter $2 billion to AI <\/a>efforts over the next five year. In addition to universities and small businesses, Walker said, \u201cwe\u2019re even working with Google.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Specifically, Google decided to focus on \u201cdefensive AI\u201d projects with DARPA, he said, which essentially protect systems from malicious AI and machine learning programs. One specific project is looking at \u201cdeep fakes\u201d \u2013 computer-generated replications of a person saying phrases, which he or she never said, or taking actions that never took place. Deep fakes have targeted politicians, but are more generally viewed as a potential tactic for information warfare. Google will contribute to efforts to better understand whether a picture or video has been tampered with.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This is \u201csomething they would, obviously, be very interested in,\u201d Walker said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Another DARPA effort that Google is supporting involves Moore\u2019s Law, which states the number of transistors on a chip doubles every two years while the costs are halved. Google will look at how to create more computing power without necessarily speeding up the clock, said Cerf, who is widely credited as one of the \u201cfathers of the internet.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cYou try to put more energy into those chips and they melt, so that doesn&#8217;t work,\u201d he continued. \u201cSo we need new architectures that make it possible to extract more computing power out of new architectural chip designs. We&#8217;re working very closely with DARPA on that. And there&#8217;s more to come.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Granted, defensive AI and computing power appear to be less <a href=\"https:\/\/www.c4isrnet.com\/it-networks\/2018\/06\/26\/why-googles-project-maven-pullout-is-a-moral-hazard\/\" target=_blank>controversial than the work Google performed under Project Maven<\/a>, providing the Department of Defense artificial intelligence capabilities for drone footage analysis. Google\u2019s decision not to renew that contract \u2013 and the employee protests that proceeded that decision \u2013 spurred a philosophical debate about whether the tech community would remain on board for development that contributes to military operations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But Walker and Cerf both say cooperation between the two communities is already extensive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI don\u2019t think it\u2019s about these two cultures not being able to align. We are aligned in many different areas,\u201d Walker said, pointing instead to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/opinion\/2018\/06\/06\/no-surprise-google-bids-maven-farewell\/\" target=\"_blank\">failures in messaging and poor communication.<\/a> \u201cWe\u2019re working with [the tech community] now. We\u2019ll continue to work with them. Government sponsors long-term research and that\u2019s a strength of our country. But the performers, the researchers, the folks who are actually doing it are mostly in the private sector and at universities. We\u2019ve got to maintain that private sector and university edge that I believe we have.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As for Google, partnership with the Pentagon will continue much as it has for over a decade.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI\u2019m very committed to that,\u201d Cerf said. \u201cIt\u2019s true that there were some people, newcomers to the Google world who were not as copacetic about this, but they\u2019re a tiny fraction. We will do the right thing.
