{"id":32203,"date":"2023-01-24T14:07:44","date_gmt":"2023-01-24T14:07:44","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/c4isrnet\/uncategorized\/2023\/01\/24\/xtend-to-supply-multi-drone-operating-system-to-israel\/"},"modified":"2026-08-08T18:32:34","modified_gmt":"2026-08-08T18:32:34","slug":"xtend-to-supply-multi-drone-operating-system-to-israel","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/c4isrnet\/unmanned\/2023\/01\/24\/xtend-to-supply-multi-drone-operating-system-to-israel\/","title":{"rendered":"Xtend to supply multi-drone operating system to Israel"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Xtend, which develops semi-autonomous drone systems, said it will deliver a multi-drone operating system to Israel\u2019s Ministry of Defense.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Israeli company said on Jan. 19 that it won a $20 million contract for the system that will enable operators to control \u201cdozens of human-guided semi-autonomous drones simultaneously.\u201d The system will include Xtend\u2019s XOS system which it describes as revolutionizing the \u201chuman to machine\u201d interaction space and says is a \u201cfirst-of-its-kind, multi-drone operating system.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Xtend has seen success in the past in the U.S. In October it received a $9 million contract to develop multi-payload drones for the Pentagon\u2019s irregular warfare office.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At the time it <a href=\"https:\/\/nam04.safelinks.protection.outlook.com\/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.defensenews.com%2Funmanned%2F2022%2F10%2F17%2Fxtend-signs-9m-drone-deal-with-pentagons-irregular-warfare-office%2F&#038;data=05%7C01%7Ccary.oreilly%40mco.com%7C674b6b7fb77549b641fc08dafa72bf92%7C1d5c96e57ee2446dbed8d0f8c50edea5%7C1%7C1%7C638097668030497893%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJWIjoiMC4wLjAwMDAiLCJQIjoiV2luMzIiLCJBTiI6Ik1haWwiLCJXVCI6Mn0%3D%7C1000%7C%7C%7C&#038;sdata=W%2BrI2I8rH4c%2BL6LJfO0TxYnmrXbEp3GHUaHnEbJh8i8%3D&#038;reserved=0\">said this is the sixth contract<\/a> between Xtend and the Irregular Warfare Technical Support Directorate, and it followed a deal in May for the supply of hundreds of Wolverine Gen2 drones. Xtend says that this is the latest of more than 20 major contracts the company has secured in the last three years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The company says XOS is programmable and Aviv Shapira, co-founder, and CEO at Xtend said that it is scalable, affordable and flexible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cXOS\u2019s unique operating system allows humans to connect and interact with drones, robots, vehicles, smart devices, and smart machines remotely, safely, and intuitively,\u201d Shapira said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The contract with Israel\u2019s Ministry of Defense is with the Directorate of Defense Research and Development, known in Hebrew as \u201cMafat\u201d in Israel. The project \u201cwill see XOS enable the remote, safe, and intuitive operation of dozens of human-guided semi-autonomous drones simultaneously, utilizing the latest virtual reality, edge processing and AI technology,\u201d the company said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In recent years the incorporation of drones, especially groups of small drones has become common across modern militaries. The man-unmanned teaming and ability to control these drones is a key issue, including the use of \u201cdrone swarms.\u201d Israel has used drone swarming technology, according to reports over the last several years. Ido Bar-On, VP of Business Development and Salessaid that Xtend and the Ministry of Defense \u201care working to secure the cooperation of other ally countries in this development program.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Xtend says that the technology will be deployed remotely by military units in various scenarios precisely, intuitively, and \u201cimmersively.\u201d The company says this enables a \u201cshared vision of enabling drones to become more than just another \u2018eye in the sky\u2019, enable operators to control, interact, and run 3rd party applications on the drones remotely, keeping forces out of danger.\u201d Operators will have access virtual reality and the system will incorporate artificial intelligence. An image the company distributed with the statement appears to show an operator wearing a helmet with a kind of VR display.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe\u2019re witnessing a revolution on the modern battlefield,\u201d said an official source, at the IDF. \u201cWorking with Xtend over the last three years, we have already been able to field systems that are now in daily use, and we are confident that this new program will provide a tremendous leap in our operational capabilities. Putting the best of civilian technology into the hands of our soldiers,\u201d the source said, according to a statement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Shapira says that XOS lets \u201calmost anyone to control multiple remote machines simultaneously using advanced VR technology, on top of an artificial intelligence layer.
