{"id":32210,"date":"2023-11-20T17:45:20","date_gmt":"2023-11-20T17:45:20","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/c4isrnet\/uncategorized\/2023\/11\/20\/raytheon-radar-defeats-missile-in-us-army-test-of-patriot-replacement\/"},"modified":"2026-08-08T18:52:51","modified_gmt":"2026-08-08T18:52:51","slug":"raytheon-radar-defeats-missile-in-us-army-test-of-patriot-replacement","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/c4isrnet\/electronic-warfare\/radar\/2023\/11\/20\/raytheon-radar-defeats-missile-in-us-army-test-of-patriot-replacement\/","title":{"rendered":"Patriot replacement radar defeats cruise missile in Raytheon test"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">WASHINGTON \u2014 The U.S. Army\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/land\/2022\/05\/02\/us-army-scrambles-to-keep-its-new-air-defense-radar-on-schedule\/\" target=\"_blank\">new missile defense radar<\/a> defeated a cruise missile in a development test, RTX\u2019s Raytheon said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The company is the developer of the Lower Tier Air and Missile Defense Sensor, or LTAMDS, that will replace the service\u2019s original Patriot air and missile defense radar with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/digital-show-dailies\/ausa\/2022\/10\/09\/us-army-on-track-to-field-24-systems-in-fy23-in-bid-for-a-modern-force\/\" target=\"_blank\">the capability to defeat ballistic missiles and other complex threats from all directions <\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link smg-interstitial-link--fallback wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.c4isrnet.com\/industry\/techwatch\/2023\/08\/30\/rtx-readies-to-test-new-air-defense-radar-following-us-air-force-deal\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__fallback-link\">RTX readies to test new air defense radar following US Air Force deal<\/a><\/aside>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In the test, LTAMDS detected and tracked a cruise missile surrogate flying in a threat-representative path and passed data to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/land\/2023\/04\/12\/us-army-greenlights-key-battle-command-system-for-full-rate-production\/\" target=\"_blank\">Northrop Grumman-developed Integrated Battle Command System<\/a>, the brains of the Army\u2019s air-and-missile defense architecture, Raytheon said in a statement Monday. IBCS directed a Patriot Advanced Capability-3 missile to fire and LTAMDS guided the missile to intercept the target, according to the company.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The testing will lead to LTAMDS achieving operational capability by the end of the year, Raytheon said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Army <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/breaking-news\/2019\/10\/17\/heres-who-will-build-the-armys-new-missile-defense-radar\/\" target=\"_blank\">awarded a contract to Raytheon four years ago to build the new radar<\/a>. The contract requires the company to deliver six of the systems.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cSeeing LTAMDS come to life is not only gratifying to the scores of experts who designed and developed it, but it reaffirms the commitment we made to deliver this exceptional radar to air defenders around the globe,\u201d Tom Laliberty, company president of land and air defense systems, said in the statement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">All six radars under contract have been built, according to Raytheon, and are all in simultaneous testing at both U.S. government and company test sites.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Testing will continue in 2024 including environmental and mobility qualification, among other test events and will lead to a \u201cfull operational capability in the calendar year,\u201d the statement said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Split development<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Army <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/digital-show-dailies\/smd\/2023\/08\/09\/us-army-splits-testing-phase-of-future-missile-defense-radar\/\" target=\"_blank\">has had to split development testing of LTAMDS into two phases<\/a>. The radar has three arrays; a main one and two in the back that give it the ability to see threats from 360 degrees.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cLast year, when I first came on board, through some system engineering reviews, we realized that trying to do all 360 degrees of tracking was too much to take on at once,\u201d Brig. Gen. Frank Lozano, the Army\u2019s program executive officer for missiles and space, told Defense News in an interview earlier in 2023.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As a result, the first year of testing will focus on the main array and the second year, in 2024, will be dedicated to full-sector capability testing, incorporating the back two arrays, Lozano said. In addition to integration challenges, the program also faced supply chain delays caused by the Coronavirus pandemic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The phased approach addresses a congressional mandate requiring the Army field an LTAMDS battalion of four sensors by December 2023.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The first unit equipped will receive \u201cresidual combat capability\u201d that already exceeds legacy radar capability,\u201d Lozano said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The plan now is to<a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/training-sim\/2023\/03\/28\/us-army-plans-test-for-combining-new-air-defense-capabilities\/\" target=\"_blank\"> conduct an operational assessment in the first quarter of fiscal 2025<\/a> that will lead to an Engineering and Manufacturing Development decision in FY25, according to Lozano.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Army is also required to field <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/smr\/defending-the-pacific\/2023\/03\/17\/first-wave-of-tech-to-defend-guam-from-newer-threats-due-in-2024\/\" target=\"_blank\">three additional LTAMDS for the defense of Guam<\/a>. And Raytheon is also <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/land\/2023\/09\/05\/poland-is-first-foreigner-to-buy-us-armys-new-missile-defense-radar\/\" target=\"_blank\">signed on to produce LTAMDS
