Two companies got site visits. But very few of the industry executives who spoke with Deputy Secretary of Defense Kathleen Hicks last week said they got answers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This was the takeaway<b> <\/b>from last week\u2019s round of meetings on Replicator, Hicks\u2019 pledge to field thousands of drones within two years <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/pentagon\/2023\/08\/28\/pentagon-unveils-replicator-drone-program-to-compete-with-china\/\" target=\"_blank\">to help defend Taiwan<\/a>. Two weeks after a similar visit <a href=\"https:\/\/www.c4isrnet.com\/pentagon\/2023\/12\/02\/defense-officials-put-technology-at-center-of-aukus-summit\/\" target=\"_blank\">from Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin<\/a>, she traveled to the Defense Innovation Unit in Mountain View, California and spoke with around 10 companies\u2019 executives.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Defense News spoke with seven of the industry executives in attendance. Most said they arrived looking for more detail on Replicator. Instead, Pentagon officials wanted more details from them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIt was more for them to hear how we are thinking about things,\u201d said Brandon Tseng, chief executive of Shield AI, a drone maker represented<b> <\/b>at the meeting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Almost four months into the initiative, many executives<b> <\/b>have basic questions about how Replicator will work. Companies want to know how to apply, how it will be funded, what systems the Pentagon will want and how many.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Many stressed their questions shouldn\u2019t be taken as criticisms. Each company that spoke with Defense News said they still wanted to be a part of Replicator and were excited by the program.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe theme from the room is frankly that Replicator is still underspecified,\u201d said Peter Ludwig, the chief technology officer of the software company Applied Intuition. Ludwig said Pentagon officials at the meeting promised to release later this month a memo with more details on the project.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Speaking with reporters at a breakfast in mid-November, Hicks said the Pentagon would choose its <a href=\"https:\/\/www.c4isrnet.com\/unmanned\/2023\/11\/21\/replicator-candidates-to-be-chosen-by-early-december-pentagon-says\/?utm_source=twitter&#038;utm_medium=social&#038;utm_campaign=tw_c4\" target=\"_blank\">first batch of Replicator systems in early December<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Executives from the ground robotics company RRAI and drone manufacturer BRINC said they were<a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/battlefield-tech\/2023\/12\/04\/pentagons-commercial-tech-arm-to-ramp-up-role-in-military-innovation\/?utm_source=twitter&#038;utm_medium=social&#038;utm_campaign=tw_dfn\" target=\"_blank\"> told by a DIU official<\/a> during the visit the first group of systems for Replicator have already been chosen and the services would announce them in January, if not earlier.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Pentagon declined to say whether it has made selections.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">After the meeting, Hicks visited two other companies \u2014 Skydio, a U.S. drone manufacturer, and Kodiak Robotics, a company developing autonomous technology for the long-haul trucking industry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Don Burnette, chief executive of Kodiak Robotics, said Hicks saw a demonstration of the company\u2019s first military test vehicle \u2014 a Ford F-150 equipped with autonomy hardware and software that allow it to operate in complex military environments. She also took a ride in one of the company\u2019s semi-trucks fitted with similar technology. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe spent a half an hour together just one on one talking strategy, talking capabilities,\u201d he told Defense News. \u201cShe got to see the technology with her own eyes, which I think is really important.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At Skydio, Hicks saw a demonstration of the company\u2019s X10D, a small drone designed for military missions. Skydio also showed Hicks its collaborative autonomy technology, which it developed through a partnership with the Defense Innovation Unit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mark Valentine, president of Skydio\u2019s global government business, said Hicks was interested in the company\u2019s approach to scaling drone production and wanted to better understand the associated challenges.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cShe is clearly deep in the issue, and I think that\u2019s important,\u201d Valentine said. \u201cWhen you have focus on that level, that\u2019s how you get things done.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Many in industry interested in Replicator want to know what the Pentagon wants from them. In particular, they are seeking two things: details on which capabilities DoD will buy first or at least a more specific description of what systems are in play.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe can scale [up] production,\u201d said Blake Resnick, chief executive of BRINC. \u201cBut we can\u2019t spend $10 or $100 million on a factory in order to build a DoD product, if the DoD is not writing orders.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Other companies who met with Hicks included Saronic, Anduril, AeroVironment, SiMa.ai, Divergent 3D and Stell Engineering.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Most companies told Defense News they arrived looking for more detail on Replicator.
