But it has received a broadside of criticism, including from a top European Union official, questioning the adequacy of the response.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Outside watchdog groups said misinformation about the war abounds on the platform, <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/twitter-musk-ella-irwin-resignation-transgender-f57a98e0c3797f1d93b694fc1bbddc2a\">whose workforce<\/a> \u2014 including its content moderation team \u2014 was gutted by billionaire Elon Musk after he bought it last year.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/c4isrnet\/information-warfare\/2023\/08\/01\/us-military-targets-deepfakes-misinformation-with-ai-powered-tool\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/GettyImages-1194850524.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">US military targets deepfakes, misinformation with AI-powered tool<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">Discerning fact from fiction is vital to military operations. The task is increasingly complex as bad information floods social media and other channels.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Fake and manipulated imagery circulating on X include \u201crepurposed old images of unrelated armed conflicts or military footage that actually originated from video games,\u201d said a <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/thierrybreton\/status\/1711808891757944866?s=46\">Tuesday letter<\/a> to Musk from European Commissioner Thierry Breton. \u201cThis appears to be manifestly false or misleading information.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Breton, the EU\u2019s digital rights chief, also warned Musk that authorities have been flagging \u201cpotentially illegal content\u201d that <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/technology-business-police-social-media-reform-52744e1d0f5b93a426f966138f2ccb52\">could violate EU laws<\/a> and \u201cyou must be timely, diligent and objective\u201d in removing it when warranted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">San Francisco-based X didn\u2019t immediately respond to a request for comment about Breton\u2019s letter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/Safety\/status\/1711564133504872481\">post late Monday<\/a> from X\u2019s safety team claimed it is treating the crisis with utmost effort: \u201cIn the past couple of days, we\u2019ve seen an increase in daily active users on @X in the conflict area, plus there have been more than 50 million posts globally focusing on the weekend\u2019s terrorist attack on Israel by Hamas. As the events continue to unfold rapidly, a cross-company leadership group has assessed this moment as a crisis requiring the highest level of response.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That includes continuing a policy frequently championed by Musk of letting users help rate what might be misinformation, which causes those posts to include a note of context but not disappear from the platform.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The struggle to identify reliable sources for news about the war was exacerbated over the weekend by Musk, who on Sunday posted the names of two accounts he said were \u201cgood\u201d for \u201cfollowing the war in real-time.\u201d Analyst Emerson Brooking of the Atlantic Council called one of those accounts \u201cabsolutely poisonous.\u201d Journalists and X users also pointed out that both accounts had previously shared a fake AI-generated image of an explosion at the Pentagon, and that one of them had posted numerous antisemitic comments in recent months. Further, Brooking said via email \u201cMusk has repeatedly and purposefully denigrated the idea of an objective media, and he made platform design decisions that undermine such reporting. We now see the result.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Part of Musk\u2019s drastic changes over the past year included removing many of the people responsible for moderating toxic content and harmful misinformation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One former member of Twitter\u2019s public policy team said the company is having a harder time taking action on posts that violate its policies because there <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/elon-musk-twitter-inc-technology-business-san-francisco-fa63069c6cb48850f3c36d052bd96044\">aren\u2019t enough people<\/a> to do that work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe layoffs are undermining the capacity of Twitter\u2019s trust and safety team, and associated teams like public policy, to provide needed support during a critical time of crisis,\u201d said Theodora Skeadas, one of thousands of employees who lost their jobs in the months after Musk bought the company.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">X says it changed one policy over the weekend to enable people to more easily choose whether or not to see sensitive media without the company actually taking down those posts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cX believes that, while difficult, it\u2019s in the public\u2019s interest to understand what\u2019s happening in real time,\u201d its statement said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The company said it is also removing newly created Hamas-affiliated accounts and working with other tech companies to try to prevent \u201cterrorist content\u201d from being distributed online. It said it is \u201calso continuing to proactively monitor for antisemitic speech as part of all our efforts. Plus we\u2019ve taken action to remove several hundred accounts attempting to manipulate trending topics.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Linda Yaccarino, <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/musk-twitter-ceo-yaccarino-interview-9327856331614e64163f50900c831bf4\">whom Elon Musk named in May<\/a> as the top executive at X, withdrew from an upcoming three-day tech conference where she was scheduled to speak, citing the need to focus on how the platform was handling the war.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWith the global crisis unfolding, Linda and her team must remain fully focused on X platform safety,\u201d X told the organizers of the WSJ Tech Live conference being held next week in Laguna Beach,
