The revisions, relayed during a simulated intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance mission, allowed the drone to more accurately identify its target through automated recognition.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cRed Hat Device Edge will enable Lockheed Martin to revolutionize artificial intelligence processing for our DOD customers\u2019 most challenging missions,\u201d Justin Taylor, Lockheed\u2019s vice president of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.c4isrnet.com\/artificial-intelligence\/\" target=\"_blank\">artificial intelligence<\/a>, said in a statement. \u201cThe ability for small military platforms to handle large AI workloads will increase their capacity in the field, ensuring our military can stay ahead of evolving threats.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Pentagon is increasingly interested in AI and machine learning, both on and off the battlefield; Deputy Secretary of Defense Kathleen Hicks in documents published earlier this year said an embrace of the technology is needed \u201cto maintain our military advantage in a digitally competitive world.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/c4isrnet\/battlefield-tech\/it-networks-battlefield-tech\/5g-it-networks-battlefield-tech\/2022\/09\/28\/lockheed-verizon-testing-5g-linked-drone-swarm-for-intel-collection\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/AF3.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">Lockheed, Verizon testing 5G-linked drone swarm for intel collection<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">Army, Air Force and Pentagon representatives, among others, attended a demonstration in May.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The department\u2019s public spending on AI, including autonomy, grew from a little more than $600 million in fiscal 2016 to $2.5 billion in 2021. More than 600 AI projects \u2014 including several connected to major weapons systems, such as the MQ-9 Unmanned Aerial Vehicle \u2014 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.c4isrnet.com\/artificial-intelligence\/2022\/02\/22\/hundreds-of-ai-projects-underway-as-defense-department-eyes-future-combat\/\" target=\"_blank\">were underway as of April 2021<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A majority of Pentagon AI activities fall under research and development, with a focus on recognizing targets, feeding recommendations to commanders, such as where to move troops or how to respond to a threat, and improving autonomy of uncrewed systems, according to the Government Accountability Office.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cLockheed Martin is at the forefront of global innovation that often defines a technological era,\u201d Francis Chow, vice president and general manager of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.redhat.com\/en\/authors\/francis-chow\" target=\"_blank\">in-vehicle operating system and edge<\/a> at Red Hat, said in a statement. \u201cWith our latest solution, Red Hat Device Edge, we\u2019ll be able to work together to change what communications and artificial intelligence looks like in the most space-constrained and far-flung environments, whether it\u2019s a remote mountain range or beyond the boundaries of Earth\u2019s atmosphere.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Lockheed, the largest defense contractor by revenue, according to Defense News analysis, previously teamed with Red Hat to more quickly upgrade the Air Force\u2019s F-22 Raptor. Before that, Red Hat joined Lockheed\u2019s cybersecurity alliance. Other members included FireEye, Microsoft and Verizon.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">IBM <a href=\"https:\/\/www.redhat.com\/en\/about\/press-releases\/ibm-closes-landmark-acquisition-red-hat-34-billion-defines-open-hybrid-cloud-future\" target=\"_blank\">acquired Red Hat<\/a> in 2019 for
