Certainly not in the near term,\u201d Joyce said at an event hosted by the Center for Strategic and International Studies think tank. \u201cBut it will make the hackers that use AI much more effective, and they will operate better than those who don\u2019t.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">U.S. officials consider mastery of AI critical to long-term international competitiveness \u2014 whether that\u2019s in defense, finance or another sector. At least <a href=\"https:\/\/www.c4isrnet.com\/battlefield-tech\/2023\/03\/13\/pentagons-historic-rd-request-has-billions-for-advanced-networks-ai\/\" target=\"_blank\">685 AI projects<\/a>, including several tied to major weapons systems, were underway at the Pentagon as of early 2021.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">With enough training, the technology can handle menial tasks, such as answering questions and digging up contact information, or augment military operations by parsing tides of incoming information and facilitating exploration of areas deemed too dangerous for troops.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Something as sophisticated as OpenAI\u2019s ChatGPT, Joyce said Tuesday, can be used to \u201ccraft very believable native-language English text\u201d that can then be applied to phishing attacks or foreign influence campaigns. ChatGPT is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.c4isrnet.com\/artificial-intelligence\/2023\/01\/27\/generative-ai-like-viral-chatgpt-lands-on-disa-technology-watch-list\/\" target=\"_blank\">capable of holding humanlike conversations<\/a> with enough prompting, and it can provide content like poetry, essays or computer code within seconds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThat\u2019s going to be a problem,\u201d Joyce said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">OpenAI CEO Sam Altman has acknowledged potential risks, telling ABC News in March that he worries about how \u201cthese models could be used for large-scale disinformation\u201d and \u201ccould be used for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.c4isrnet.com\/cyber\/2023\/03\/02\/biden-vows-to-wield-all-instruments-in-fighting-cyber-threats\/\" target=\"_blank\">offensive cyberattacks<\/a>.\u201d He also sought to explain its guardrails, meeting with lawmakers earlier this year to demystify the product.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">ChatGPT logged more than 1 million users within a week of its late-2022 launch. The application is thought to be the fastest growing in history, outpacing TikTok and Instagram to 100 million active monthly users.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>U.S. officials
