The agreement with Lockheed Martin is aimed toward developing a variant of Iron Beam for the U.S., the companies said in a joint statement on Dec. 5.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIn the last year, a series of tests on the system was carried out that proved the operational capability of the system,\u201d they said. \u201cIron Beam is a 100kW-class HELWS, expected to be the first-ever operational system for ground-based air defense against threats such as rockets, mortars and UAV\u2019s, delivering engagement at the speed of light.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Israel showcased the laser air defense system to President Joe Biden when he visited in July. A joint declaration on July 14 said that the countries <a href=\"https:\/\/nam04.safelinks.protection.outlook.com\/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.whitehouse.gov%2Fbriefing-room%2Fstatements-releases%2F2022%2F07%2F14%2Fthe-jerusalem-u-s-israel-strategic-partnership-joint-declaration%2F&#038;data=05%7C01%7Ccary.oreilly%40mco.com%7Ceda08eba75cf493c552e08dad6b8de81%7C1d5c96e57ee2446dbed8d0f8c50edea5%7C1%7C0%7C638058386742004064%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJWIjoiMC4wLjAwMDAiLCJQIjoiV2luMzIiLCJBTiI6Ik1haWwiLCJXVCI6Mn0%3D%7C3000%7C%7C%7C&#038;sdata=TCzSggufjyCT2e7GowFa4CODSqDvu1H1zVZKR9EbkC8%3D&#038;reserved=0\">would work on laser<\/a> defense technology. In September Lockheed delivered a 300kW-class laser system to the Pentagon\u2019s Office of the Under Secretary of Defense for Research and Engineering. This was part of the U.S. Army\u2019s Indirect Fires Protection Capability-High Energy Laser Demonstrator.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Rafael and Lockheed see the teaming agreement as a \u201cforce multiplier\u201d and an important aspect of the security cooperation between Israel and the U.S., it said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">CEO Yaov Har-Even said that Rafael and Israel\u2019s Ministry of Defense have been investing in laser research for thirty years.
