It was extensively evaluated over the summer aboard an Arleigh Burke-class destroyer <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/naval\/2022\/07\/28\/at-rimpac-2022-new-efforts-to-boost-sustainability-lethality-of-combined-force-in-the-pacific\/\" target=\"_blank\">at the Rim of the Pacific<\/a>, the world\u2019s largest maritime military exercise, executives told C4ISRNET, and will likely return to the sea for additional trials by the end of 2023.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIn general, this area of electronic warfare that we\u2019re focused on is around putting electronic-warfare systems onto ships, Navy ships. And those systems help defend the ships against whatever threats that they face,\u201d Mike Meaney, Northrop\u2019s vice president of land and maritime sensors, said in a Jan. 16 interview. \u201cIt could be other radars, it could be missile seekers and anti-ship missiles.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIt\u2019s a very dangerous world today, from a warfighting perspective,\u201d he added, \u201cand our adversaries, our peer adversaries, have very threatening capabilities <a href=\"https:\/\/www.c4isrnet.com\/cyber\/2022\/08\/05\/operation-cyber-dragon-turning-us-navy-reservists-into-digital-defenders\/\" target=\"_blank\">in the maritime domain<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Electronic warfare, in general, represents a battle for control of the electromagnetic spectrum, used for communications, weapons guidance and more, which U.S. defense officials say is paramount in a potential fight with China or Russia. Electronic capabilities like the Ultra-Lite can help militaries detect, deceive, disrupt and even destroy one another.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Northrop is leaning into years of experience with the Surface Electronic Warfare Improvement Program, or SEWIP, to realize the smaller, more-quickly installed Ultra-Lite jammer. The company is currently tapped by the Navy for what is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.c4isrnet.com\/digital-show-dailies\/navy-league\/2021\/08\/02\/electronic-attack-system-to-provide-navy-more-capabilities-flexible-options\/\" target=\"_blank\">known as SEWIP Block 3<\/a>, which affords a non-kinetic means of swatting down anti-ship missiles, among other abilities.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/defensenews\/outlook\/2022\/12\/08\/project-overmatch-us-navy-preps-to-deploy-secretive-multidomain-tech\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/24_special-overmatch.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">Project Overmatch: US Navy preps to deploy secretive multidomain tech<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">The fielding of Project Overmatch will arguably be the Navy\u2019s most important work in 2023.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe wanted to scale up our system for installation on larger ships, such as aircraft carriers and amphibious assault ships, and we also wanted to scale it down for the smaller ship classes. And that\u2019s where Ultra-Lite EA comes into play, into being,\u201d Meaney said. \u201cWe think there\u2019s a big opportunity.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Meaney in 2021 told C4ISRNET that SEWIP can provide an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.c4isrnet.com\/electronic-warfare\/2022\/01\/10\/northrop-looks-to-adapt-electronic-attack-system-for-smaller-ships\/\" target=\"_blank\">\u201cunlimited supply of bullets\u201d<\/a> to unleash against perceived dangers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Northrop is using its own resources \u2014 money, time, manpower \u2014 to develop the Ultra-Lite EA System in anticipation of a formal ask from the Navy. Lockheed Martin, another defense industry juggernaut, is pursuing similar tech, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/breakingdefense.com\/2022\/06\/lockheed-prepping-to-demo-scaled-ea-capability-at-rimpac\/\" target=\"_blank\">several defense publications<\/a>. An inquiry made to Lockheed on Jan. 20 went unanswered.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The testing at RIMPAC reassured Northrop of its investment thus far, according to<b> <\/b>Greg Teitelbaum, director of maritime electronic warfare and information warfare. It also drummed up further interest from what was described as a \u201cnumber of other sources.\u201d Publicly available details are scant.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe certainly can\u2019t talk about the techniques and the tactics or the specifics, but based on what our goals were for the demonstration and the data that we saw, it very much validated all of our core electronic-attack capabilities that we brought to that exercise,\u201d he said. \u201cWe certainly <a href=\"https:\/\/www.c4isrnet.com\/battlefield-tech\/it-networks\/2022\/04\/28\/us-army-wraps-review-of-future-battlespace-network-tools\/\" target=\"_blank\">met all of our expectations<\/a> and
