{"id":33286,"date":"2023-03-16T17:37:13","date_gmt":"2023-03-16T17:37:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/c4isrnet\/uncategorized\/2023\/03\/16\/pentagon-starts-work-on-secretive-joint-rapid-experimentation\/"},"modified":"2026-08-08T18:29:35","modified_gmt":"2026-08-08T18:29:35","slug":"pentagon-starts-work-on-secretive-joint-rapid-experimentation","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/c4isrnet\/battlefield-tech\/2023\/03\/16\/pentagon-starts-work-on-secretive-joint-rapid-experimentation\/","title":{"rendered":"Pentagon starts work on secretive experiment to aid long-range fires"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">WASHINGTON \u2014 With funding \u201cfinally\u201d in hand, the Pentagon can start a series of advanced technology demonstrations for which its research and engineering team has planned during the last two years, according to the department\u2019s top technology officer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Heidi Shyu, the undersecretary of defense for research and engineering, said this week that the Defense Department began to execute four of the projects in the Rapid Defense Experimentation Reserve\u2019s first series of exercises \u2014 or sprint \u2014 which will focus on technologies that support long-range fires.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe\u2019re going to be off and running, demonstrating these prototypes in a contested environment,\u201d Shyu said March 15 at the McAleese &amp; Associates conference. \u201cIt can\u2019t work just in a lab. It\u2019s got to work in a real environment, and that\u2019s exactly what we\u2019re focused on.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.c4isrnet.com\/2022\/01\/13\/pentagon-tech-chief-says-new-rapid-experimentation-reserve-is-moving-forward\/\" target=\"_blank\">The Pentagon created the Rapid Defense Experimentation Reserve, or RDER, in 2021<\/a> to address high-need capability gaps across the military. Since then, Shyu and her office have culled through hundreds of project proposals from the services and crafted plans for three demonstration sprints. Following the long-range fires effort, the second sprint will focus on contested logistics and the third on base defense.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The department <a href=\"https:\/\/www.c4isrnet.com\/battlefield-tech\/2023\/03\/13\/pentagons-historic-rd-request-has-billions-for-advanced-networks-ai\/\" target=\"_blank\">requested $687 million for RDER in its fiscal 2024 budget<\/a> \u2014 nearly double the $358 million it asked for last year. Congress appropriated $272 million for the program in FY23 and $34 million the previous year for the effort, funding that Shyu said helped the department start the first series of demonstrations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The growth in the FY24 spending request, which was released this week, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/pentagon\/2022\/10\/11\/pentagon-eyes-third-rapid-experimentation-sprint-as-congress-mulls-cut\/\" target=\"_blank\">is required to support the second and third sprints<\/a>, she added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The details of the sprints are classified, so it\u2019s unclear what specific projects they\u2019ll support. The first series includes demonstrations with the United Kingdom and Australia, Shyu said, adding that RDER sprints will take place as part of joint exercises, including U.S. Indo-Pacific Command\u2019s annual Northern Edge training event scheduled for May.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe\u2019re leveraging multiple experiments and exercises that are being
