{"id":33448,"date":"2024-04-18T15:30:58","date_gmt":"2024-04-18T15:30:58","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/c4isrnet\/uncategorized\/2024\/04\/18\/us-uk-issue-sanctions-on-iran-over-drone-and-missile-attack-on-israel\/"},"modified":"2026-08-08T18:44:10","modified_gmt":"2026-08-08T18:44:10","slug":"us-uk-issue-sanctions-on-iran-over-drone-and-missile-attack-on-israel","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/c4isrnet\/newsletters\/unmanned-systems\/2024\/04\/18\/us-uk-issue-sanctions-on-iran-over-drone-and-missile-attack-on-israel\/","title":{"rendered":"US, UK issue sanctions on Iran over drone and missile attack on Israel"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">(AP) The U.S. and U.K. on Thursday imposed a new round of sanctions on Iran as concern grows that Tehran\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/iran-israel-attacks-f27cda966ac274982d968cbcc033eff0\">unprecedented attack on Israel could fuel a wider war<\/a> in the Middle East.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Treasury\u2019s Office of Foreign Assets Control targeted 16 people and two entities in Iran that produce engines that power the drones used in the <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/israel-iran-hamas-latest-04-17-2024-7e4ba24fbb150f020a2d240dad9d462f\">April 13 attack on Israel<\/a>. OFAC also sanctioned five firms involved in steel production and three subsidiaries of Iranian automaker Bahman Group \u2014 which is accused of materially supporting Iran\u2019s military and other sanctioned groups. A representative from Bahman was not immediately available for comment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Additionally, the U.K. is targeting several Iranian military branches and individuals involved in Iran\u2019s drone and ballistic missile industries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">President Joe Biden said in a statement that he had directed U.S. Treasury \u201cto continue to impose sanctions that further degrade Iran\u2019s military industries.\u201d \u201cLet it be clear to all those who enable or support Iran\u2019s attacks,\u201d he said, \u201cwe will not hesitate to take all necessary action to hold you accountable.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">U.K. Prime Minister Rishi Sunak said in a statement that the sanctions \u201cwill further limit Iran\u2019s ability to destabilize the region.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In addition to Treasury\u2019s sanctions, the U.S. Commerce Department is imposing new controls to restrict Iran\u2019s access to basic commercial grade microelectronics, which apply to items manufactured outside the U.S. that are produced using U.S. technology.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The actions come after U.S. officials earlier this week <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/imf-world-bank-yellen-sanctions-iran-ukraine-china-7643ff47d58f2a1d6314dae0f0a455bd\">warned that they were readying<\/a> new sanctions in response to Iran\u2019s activity in the region and to prevent future attacks. Lawmakers on Capitol Hill also have been quickly pushing forward legislation that would financially punish the Islamic Republic and its leaders.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Iran\u2019s attack on Israel early Sunday came in response to what it says was an Israeli strike on Iran\u2019s consulate in Syria earlier this month. Israel\u2019s military chief said Monday that his country will respond to the Iranian attack, while world leaders caution against retaliation, trying to avoid a spiral of violence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">European Union leaders <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/eu-summit-middle-east-ukraine-87bb82db49af62b98e0ec7d2de7e38ca\">also vowed on Wednesday<\/a> to ramp up sanctions on Iran, targeting its drone and missile deliveries to proxies in Gaza, Yemen and Lebanon.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">EU foreign policy chief Josep Borrell said the existing EU sanctions regime would be strengthened and expanded to punish Tehran and help prevent future attacks on Israel. At the same time, he said, Israel needed to exercise restraint.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI don\u2019t want to exaggerate, but we are on the edge of a war, a regional war in the Middle East, which will be sending shockwaves to the rest of the world, and in particular to Europe,\u201d he warned. \u201cSo stop it.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The U.S. has already sanctioned hundreds of entities and people in Iran \u2014 from the central bank and government officials to drone producers and money exchangers \u2014 accused of materially supporting Iran\u2019s Revolutionary Guard and foreign militant groups such as Hamas, Hezbollah and the Houthis.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And U.S. efforts to limit Iran\u2019s income from oil and petroleum products span back decades.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The question remains how effective sanctions will be, and have been, in preventing Iran from ramping up its production of military equipment. American defense officials accuse Iran of supplying drones to Russia as it pursues its invasion of Ukraine, which has reached a third year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Earlier this week, Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen said during a press conference that the U.S. has \u201cbeen working to diminish Iran\u2019s ability to export oil.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p
