{"id":33672,"date":"2023-11-16T18:45:28","date_gmt":"2023-11-16T18:45:28","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/c4isrnet\/uncategorized\/2023\/11\/16\/lockheed-will-deliver-advanced-tpy-4-radar-to-air-force-for-evaluation\/"},"modified":"2026-08-08T18:36:47","modified_gmt":"2026-08-08T18:36:47","slug":"lockheed-will-deliver-advanced-tpy-4-radar-to-air-force-for-evaluation","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/c4isrnet\/intel-geoint\/sensors\/2023\/11\/16\/lockheed-will-deliver-advanced-tpy-4-radar-to-air-force-for-evaluation\/","title":{"rendered":"Lockheed will deliver advanced TPY-4 radar to Air Force for evaluation"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">SYRACUSE, N.Y. \u2014 Lockheed Martin is preparing to send the U.S. Air Force its advanced TPY-4 radar for further evaluation, following months of internal testing and tweaks at company facilities in rural New York.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The software-defined sensor, capable of detecting and tracking everything from small drones to jets to ballistic missiles, is slated to replace the decades-old TPS-75 radar as part of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/industry\/2020\/05\/11\/these-three-companies-got-money-to-prototype-new-ground-based-radars-for-the-us-air-force\/\" target=\"_blank\">Three-Dimensional Expeditionary Long Range Radar<\/a> effort, or 3DELRR.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Air Force picked Lockheed\u2019s technology last year, beating out an offering from Northrop Grumman. The service at the time cited production and sustainment costs as well as overall capability in its decision-making.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cOne thing that\u2019s great about the TPY-4, as an example, is it\u2019s a software-defined radar upfront,\u201d Steve Allen, Lockheed\u2019s program director for ground-based air surveillance, told reporters during <a href=\"https:\/\/www.c4isrnet.com\/intel-geoint\/sensors\/2023\/11\/14\/lockheed-seeks-expanded-roles-for-q-53-radar-including-drone-detection\/\" target=\"_blank\">a Nov. 2 tour of the company\u2019s test range and assembly lines<\/a>. \u201cWhen we have changes of targets, or what we\u2019re looking for, it becomes a lot of \u2018how do we change our software?\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Allen said he expects the TPY-4 to be pushed to its limits once it\u2019s handed off at Eglin Air Force Base in Florida, with the service determined to discover \u201cwhat this thing can really, really do.\u201d Testing is expected to begin in the summer.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/c4isrnet\/industry\/2023\/10\/30\/leonardo-elbit-units-to-prototype-targeting-device-for-us-army\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/230413-A-IG696-0319.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">Leonardo, Elbit units to prototype targeting device for US Army<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">The U.S. Army published a request for prototype proposal for the Joint Effects Targeting System II in late 2022.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The TPY-4 features an active electronically scanned array, often shortened to AESA, and is available in both fixed and mobile variants. The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lockheedmartin.com\/content\/dam\/lockheed-martin\/rms\/documents\/ground-based-air-surveillance-radars\/TPY-X_TPY-4_brochure.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">many pucks or nodules<\/a> on its face allow for multitasking and digital reprogramming.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Lockheed announced the successful production of the first TPY-4 in May 2022. At least three were being worked on during the November tour.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">International interest in the TPY-4 is strong, according to company leaders. The Norwegian military is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/air\/2023\/09\/08\/argentina-buys-p-3-orion-maritime-patrol-aircraft-from-norway\/\" target=\"_blank\">awaiting a delivery<\/a> after signing a contract months ago. Others are queueing \u2014 or at least window-shopping.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThere\u2019s been a lot of countries that are very, very interested,\u201d Allen said. \u201cThey\u2019re waiting for the Air Force to, kind of, get through their process to say, \u2018OK, we\u2019re comfortable with the maturity level,\u2019 before they take the next step.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Lockheed is the world\u2019s largest defense contractor when ranked by defense-related revenue, earning more than $63 billion in 2022, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/people.defensenews.com\/top-100\/\" target=\"_blank\">Defense News Top 100 analysis<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The system features an active electronically scanned array.
