{"id":33945,"date":"2024-04-08T17:42:00","date_gmt":"2024-04-08T17:42:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/c4isrnet\/uncategorized\/2024\/04\/08\/shield-ai-to-let-hivemind-software-fly-three-more-aircraft\/"},"modified":"2026-08-08T18:35:57","modified_gmt":"2026-08-08T18:35:57","slug":"shield-ai-to-let-hivemind-software-fly-three-more-aircraft","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/c4isrnet\/artificial-intelligence\/2024\/04\/08\/shield-ai-to-let-hivemind-software-fly-three-more-aircraft\/","title":{"rendered":"Shield AI to let Hivemind software fly three more aircraft"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">NATIONAL HARBOR, Md. \u2014 Shield AI in the next year plans to have its Hivemind digital pilot working aboard three additional types of aircraft, bringing the total to nine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The California-based company has already folded the autonomous flight software into three classes of quadcopters, its own <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/unmanned\/2023\/10\/10\/shield-ai-unveils-v-bat-teams-drone-swarm-tech-with-eye-to-replicator\/\" target=\"_blank\">V-Bat drone<\/a>, the F-16 fighter jet and the Kratos-made MQM-178 Firejet drone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Up next are two more Kratos products, the XQ-58 and BQM-177, according to Brandon Tseng, the president of Shield AI. The firm has not picked a third candidate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe want to put <a href=\"https:\/\/www.c4isrnet.com\/unmanned\/uas\/2024\/01\/18\/ai-enabled-valkyrie-drone-teases-future-of-us-air-force-fleet\/\" target=\"_blank\">our AI pilot<\/a> on every aircraft under the sun. The V-Bat is fantastic for what it does, but we also recognize we\u2019re not going to build every single aircraft,\u201d Tseng told C4ISRNET on April 8 at the Navy League\u2019s Sea-Air-Space conference. \u201cWe\u2019ll work with any original equipment manufacturer who wants to play ball.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The U.S. Defense Department is increasingly interested in the confluence of artificial intelligence and unmanned technologies. Autonomous drones and machinery with control beamed in from afar can explore places deemed too dangerous for troops, assist with targeting, and introduce additional firepower.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The department in fiscal 2025 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.c4isrnet.com\/battlefield-tech\/2024\/03\/12\/pentagon-trims-tech-research-funding-request-ai-networking-flat\/\" target=\"_blank\">sought $1.8 billion for AI<\/a> \u2014 the same amount as the year prior. It also recently launched the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/pentagon\/2023\/12\/19\/replicator-an-inside-look-at-the-pentagons-ambitious-drone-program\/\" target=\"_blank\">Replicator initiative<\/a>, which seeks to deploy thousands of attritable systems to counter the perceived mass of China.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Hivemind\u2019s ability to integrate with different aircraft is the result of Shield AI\u2019s \u201csoftware infrastructure, design tools and pipelines,\u201d Tseng said, describing it as the \u201csecret sauce.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cGoogle has invested billions of dollars into the Android operating system. Tesla has invested billions of dollars into Tesla\u2019s self-driving, which they\u2019re putting on car to car to car to car,\u201d he added. \u201cWe\u2019ve invested a lot into a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.c4isrnet.com\/battlefield-tech\/it-networks\/2023\/10\/10\/army-exec-wants-robust-industry-input-in-revamp-of-artillery-software\/\" target=\"_blank\">software ecosystem<\/a>,
