{"id":34181,"date":"2022-11-08T15:40:21","date_gmt":"2022-11-08T15:40:21","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/c4isrnet\/uncategorized\/2022\/11\/08\/chinas-j-20-with-low-observable-tech-on-display-at-zhuhai-airshow\/"},"modified":"2026-08-08T18:32:07","modified_gmt":"2026-08-08T18:32:07","slug":"chinas-j-20-with-low-observable-tech-on-display-at-zhuhai-airshow","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/c4isrnet\/industry\/2022\/11\/08\/chinas-j-20-with-low-observable-tech-on-display-at-zhuhai-airshow\/","title":{"rendered":"China\u2019s J-20 with low-observable tech on display at Zhuhai Airshow"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">MELBOURNE, Australia \u2014 China has at least 200 stealthy <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/global\/asia-pacific\/2021\/10\/29\/new-variants-of-chinese-stealth-fighters-break-cover\/\" target=\"_blank\">J-20 fighters<\/a> and more than 240 J-16 multirole strike aircraft in service, based on analysis of construction numbers painted on the jets by a Chinese military aviation expert.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Andreas Rupprecht, who has authored several books on China\u2019s military aviation industry and the People\u2019s Liberation Army Air Force, told Defense News that based on the construction numbers seen on the jets at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/air\/2018\/11\/07\/china-showcases-progress-on-stealth-fighter-jet-at-zhuhai-airshow\/\" target=\"_blank\">Zhuhai Airshow<\/a>, there have been four production batches of the J-20 and 11 batches of J-16s.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He noted that two of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/global\/asia-pacific\/2021\/09\/29\/china-preps-rollout-of-a-new-carrier-based-fighter-jet\/\" target=\"_blank\">Chengdu J-20 fighters<\/a> at the show had \u201cCB0369\u2033 and \u201cCB0370\u2033 painted in small letters behind the canopy of the jets. Based on previous examples seen in public or on photos and videos released by China, \u201cCB03\u2033 would indicate the jets were from the fourth production batch, with \u201cCB00\u2033 being the first.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/c4isrnet\/battlefield-tech\/2022\/11\/08\/air-show-seeks-to-position-china-as-global-competitor\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/J-20.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">Air show seeks to position China as global arms competitor<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">World&#039;s fourth-largest arms exporter touts high-tech drones, warplanes, missile defense.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The last two digits of the construction number indicate the running number of that particular batch, with the jets at the air show being the 69th and 70th aircraft in the fourth production batch of J-20s.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He added that, based on his previous research, his \u201cconservative estimate\u201d is that the previous three production batches of J-20s had at least 18, 46 and 56 airframes, respectively. And adding 70 aircraft to the fourth batch and approximately 18 low-rate production platforms would bring the total J-20 production to 208 aircraft.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The presence of J-20s on static display at the air show has allowed photographers to obtain better resolution images of the aircraft than previously possible. The jets at the show, which runs Nov. 8-13, were powered by indigenous WS-10C engines and features low-observable sawtooth edges on their afterburner nozzles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Justin Bronk, a senior research fellow for air power and technology at the U.K.-based think tank Royal United Services Institute, said \u201cthe surface detail shots show just how much progress the Chinese aircraft industry has made on manufacturing tolerance and quality control.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Bronk told Defense News that based photos of the J-20 low-rate initial production aircraft, which took part in the flying display at the 2018 Zhuhai Airshow, \u201cChina continues to make progress in closing the gap with U.S. low-observable designs.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Meanwhile, the J-16 on static display this year carried the construction number \u201c1105\u2033 on the outside of its air intakes. This means the aircraft at the show \u2014 which is assigned to the 172nd Air Brigade of the People\u2019s Liberation Army Air Force \u2014 is the 245th production J-16.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/air\/2018\/01\/10\/images-reveal-chinas-j-16-jets-stepping-up-introduction-into-service\/\" target=\"_blank\">J-16 started entering PLAAF service<\/a> in 2015. It is based on the Chinese J-11B interceptor and the Russian Sukhoi Su-30MK series, both of which can trace their lineage back to the Sukhoi Su-27 Flanker interceptor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">China has developed an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/global\/asia-pacific\/2021\/09\/24\/china-to-show-off-its-new-electronic-attack-jet\/\" target=\"_blank\">electronic-attack version of the J-16<\/a> known as the J-16D.
