{"id":34433,"date":"2023-10-02T17:22:12","date_gmt":"2023-10-02T17:22:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/c4isrnet\/uncategorized\/2023\/10\/02\/booz-allen-hamilton-invests-in-ai-security-startup-hiddenlayer\/"},"modified":"2026-08-08T18:54:39","modified_gmt":"2026-08-08T18:54:39","slug":"booz-allen-hamilton-invests-in-ai-security-startup-hiddenlayer","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/c4isrnet\/artificial-intelligence\/2023\/10\/02\/booz-allen-hamilton-invests-in-ai-security-startup-hiddenlayer\/","title":{"rendered":"Booz Allen Hamilton invests in AI security startup HiddenLayer"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">WASHINGTON \u2014 Booz Allen Hamilton, one of the largest U.S. defense contractors, said it invested in HiddenLayer, a smaller company specializing in digital defenses of artificial intelligence and sensitive networks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">While Booz Allen did not specify how much it spent, or exactly when the deal was completed, it did say the move was made to bolster its adversarial AI portfolio, which aims to shield the increasingly popular algorithms and applications from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.c4isrnet.com\/opinion\/2023\/09\/21\/cyber-attacks-reveal-uncomfortable-truths-about-us-defenses\/\" target=\"_blank\">malign manipulation<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cOur clients operate in complex environments that require AI models be highly specialized, rapidly deployable, and secure,\u201d Matt Keating, who leads Booz Allens\u2019 adversarial AI efforts, said in a statement. \u201cThe HiddenLayer investment by Booz Allen Ventures better positions us to integrate startup, commercial, and open-source innovation to rapidly augment our existing capabilities.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The U.S. Department of Defense and the intelligence community <a href=\"https:\/\/www.c4isrnet.com\/artificial-intelligence\/2023\/08\/18\/dont-ditch-soldiers-for-machines-combine-them-rainey-says\/\" target=\"_blank\">are leaning into AI, autonomy and the like<\/a> to gain advantages on the battlefield and more effectively parse mountains of national-security information.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Increased adoption, though, can open the door for vulnerabilities, such as data poisoning or code tampering. The former concerns itself with cybersecurity and predictive maintenance. The latter made headlines when it used its AI tools to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.c4isrnet.com\/industry\/2023\/08\/29\/balloon-tracker-synthetaic-partners-with-microsoft-for-cloud-power\/\" target=\"_blank\">independently track the Chinese spy ballon<\/a> that zigzagged across the U.S. earlier this year. Synthetaic in August also announced a cloud-computing partnership with Microsoft.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Booz Allen in 2022 earned nearly $6 billion in defense revenue, securing it the No. 18 spot on the Defense News \u201cTop 100,\u201d a list of the world\u2019s largest defense contractors.
