But their large fuselage-mounted radar domes can detect aircraft hundreds of miles away and they remain useful to monitor <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/hub\/nato\">Russia\u2019s war on Ukraine<\/a> from NATO\u2019s eastern flank.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/c4isrnet\/intel-geoint\/sensors\/2023\/11\/16\/lockheed-will-deliver-advanced-tpy-4-radar-to-air-force-for-evaluation\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/220309-F-SF323-1005.jpeg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">Lockheed will deliver advanced TPY-4 radar to Air Force for evaluation<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">The system features an active electronically scanned array. Its many nodules allow for multitasking and rapid repogramming.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">NATO said that production of the six new Wedgetails \u2014 a militarized version of the Boeing 737 jetliner \u2014 will begin \u201cin coming years,\u201d with the first planes expected to be ready for duty by 2031. No cost was provided for the planes, but based on U.S. and U.K. contract information the price could hit $5 billion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">NATO\u2019s contract with Boeing \u2014 one of the military organization\u2019s biggest ever purchases \u2014 is set to be signed next year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cSurveillance and control aircraft are crucial for NATO\u2019s collective defense,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/russia-ukraine-war-nato-ammunition-zelenskyy-stoltenberg-4f40e940d63f595445f1410dddf0ba73\">NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg<\/a> said in a Nov. 15 statement announcing the move. \u201cBy pooling resources, allies can buy and operate major assets collectively that would be too expensive for individual countries to purchase.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Apart from the AWACS aircraft and a small fleet of surveillance drones, NATO as an organization owns no military equipment. The allies themselves provide materiel for its operations. The U.S., U.K. and Turkey \u2014 all NATO members \u2014 either fly the Wedgetail separately or plan to operate it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Australia also uses Wedgetails and has made one available for use along NATO\u2019s eastern flank.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Equipped with powerful radar, the planes provide situational awareness about aircraft and missile movements for hundreds of miles. They can detect hostile activity in the air or from ships and are able to direct NATO fighter jets to their targets.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The E-7A fleet is expected to have its main base at Geilenkirchen in Germany and Wedgetails could operate from several forward locations across Europe.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The outgoing Boeing E-3s were purchased in 1977 at the height of <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/hub\/cold-war\">the Cold War<\/a>, when <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/hub\/jimmy-carter\">Jimmy Carter<\/a> became U.S. president and as a missile crisis with the Soviet Union was festering. They are continually being refurbished so they can keep flying until 2035.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Some were deployed in U.S. skies after the Sept. 11, 2001 attacks to help protect cities and nuclear power plants. They can also be used for air policing, evacuation operations and to provide help during natural disasters.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The contract with the company \u2014
