{"id":34527,"date":"2024-03-09T23:01:05","date_gmt":"2024-03-09T23:01:05","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/c4isrnet\/uncategorized\/2024\/03\/09\/stratolaunch-conducts-first-powered-flight-of-new-hypersonic-vehicle\/"},"modified":"2026-08-08T18:51:24","modified_gmt":"2026-08-08T18:51:24","slug":"stratolaunch-conducts-first-powered-flight-of-new-hypersonic-vehicle","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/c4isrnet\/battlefield-tech\/hypersonics\/2024\/03\/09\/stratolaunch-conducts-first-powered-flight-of-new-hypersonic-vehicle\/","title":{"rendered":"Stratolaunch conducts first powered flight of new hypersonic vehicle"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">(AP) \u2014 U.S. aerospace company Stratolaunch said it conducted the first powered test flight of a new unmanned craft for hypersonic research on March 9 and called it a success.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Hypersonic describes flights at speeds of at least Mach 5, or five times the speed of sound.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/c4isrnet\/battlefield-tech\/hypersonics\/2023\/12\/11\/stratolaunchs-roc-set-to-launch-talon-a-on-first-hypersonic-flight\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/10-28-22-Stratolaunch-4949.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">Stratolaunch\u2019s Roc set to launch Talon-A on first hypersonic flight<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">The Talon-A could provide DoD with a reusable, more affordable platform to test and validate high-speed components, subsystems and other technologies.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Chief Executive Officer Zachary Krevor said in a statement that the Talon-A-1 vehicle \u201creached high supersonic speeds approaching Mach 5 and collected a great amount of data at an incredible value to our customers.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Krevor said he could not release the specific altitude and speed because of proprietary agreements with customers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The company\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/1ea378f268b548a7895b2c7c76eca5a0\">massive six-engine carrier aircraft Roc<\/a> carried the Talon aloft, attached to the center of its gigantic wing, and released it off the central coast of California.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Talon, powered by a liquid-fuel rocket engine, ended its flight by descending into the ocean as planned. While this Talon was expendable, a future version will be capable of landing on a runway for reuse.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Stratolaunch said the primary objectives for the flight included a safe air-launch release of the vehicle, engine ignition, acceleration, sustained climb in altitude, and a controlled water landing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The company called the result a major milestone in the development of the United States\u2019 first privately funded, reusable hypersonic test capability.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Stratolaunch conducted two <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/science-d52d049d4f1fb6d48941a4954446a337\">captive-carry flights<\/a>, in December and February, in which the Talon was taken aloft with live propellant but was not released from the mothership.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Stratolaunch is based at Mojave Air and Space Port in the Mojave Desert north of Los Angeles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Roc aircraft, named after an enormous mythological bird, has a wingspan of 385 feet (117 meters) and twin fuselages that give the impression of two big jets flying side by side.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It was developed by Microsoft co-founder Paul G. Allen, who died just months before it flew for the first time in April 2019.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/c296d4acce4f403582e2ecbe8fd9f1c8\/Enormous-Stratolaunch-aircraft-rolled-out-for-first-time\">Allen intended to use it as a carrier aircraft for space launches<\/a>, carrying satellite-laden rockets beneath the center of the wing and releasing them at high altitude.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That project was canceled, and new owners then repurposed Stratolaunch for launches of reusable hypersonic research vehicles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Stratolaunch has announced flight contracts with the U.S. Air Force Research Laboratory and the Navy\u2019s Multiservice Advanced Capability Test Bed program as a subcontractor to technology company Leidos of Reston,
