{"id":34702,"date":"2019-04-26T19:04:56","date_gmt":"2019-04-26T19:04:56","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/c4isrnet\/uncategorized\/2019\/04\/26\/italy-to-buy-drones-to-keep-company-alive-but-the-air-force-doesnt-want-them\/"},"modified":"2026-08-07T23:51:22","modified_gmt":"2026-08-07T23:51:22","slug":"italy-to-buy-drones-to-keep-company-alive-but-the-air-force-doesnt-want-them","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/c4isrnet\/unmanned\/2019\/04\/26\/italy-to-buy-drones-to-keep-company-alive-but-the-air-force-doesnt-want-them\/","title":{"rendered":"Italy to buy drones to keep company alive, but the Air Force doesn\u2019t want them"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">ROME \u2014 The Italian government said it will purchase the troubled P.1HH drone from Italy-based Piaggio Aerospace as it seeks to keep the firm afloat, despite an apparent lack of interest in the platform from the Italian Air Force.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Ministry of Economic Development announced April 24 the acquisition of four drones, which are unmanned variants of the firm\u2019s P180 business aircraft.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Confirming the purchase, the Defence Ministry said the purchase would serve the \u201coperational needs\u201d of the Italian armed forces and protect the \u201cstrategic value\u201d of the company, while strengthening Italy\u2019s credentials as a partner in the pan-European EuroMALE drone program.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Ministry of Economic Development added that future purchases would follow, with an industrial source telling Defense News another four drones would be bought.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Piaggio Aerospace was placed in receivership late last year by then-owner Mubadala, an investment fund based in the United Arab Emirates, which also canceled its planned order of eight Piaggio P.1HH drones.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One reported reason for Mubadala\u2019s decision was its impatience as Italy <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/global\/europe\/2018\/11\/23\/italys-piaggio-aerospace-requests-receivership-amid-lagging-drone-deal\/\" target=\"_blank\">dragged its heels<\/a> on promises to buy an enhanced version of the drone, preferred by the Italian Air Force and known at the P.2HH.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As Italy\u2019s parliamentary defense commission dragged its heels on approving the P.2HH order last year, Mubadala pulled the plug on the firm, even as work on its order of P.1HH drones was nearing completion.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/defensenews\/global\/europe\/2019\/04\/18\/leonardo-boss-warns-germanys-saudi-embargo-will-damage-european-industry\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"210\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/GettyImages-79703403.jpg_2b1a2c.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">Leonardo boss warns Germany\u2019s Saudi embargo will damage European industry<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">Alessandro Profumo also quibbled the habit of France and Germany to launch programs together before later enlisting new partners.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The decision put hundreds of jobs at Piaggio in jeopardy and left the firm with incomplete P.1HH drones.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In March, Italian Air Force chief Gen. Alberto Rosso told Italy\u2019s parliament he was not interested in buying them, adding to speculation the drone program was dead.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But he appears to be have been overruled, as Italy\u2019s government seeks to save jobs at the company.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The industrial source said the four drones set to be purchased by Italy for the Air Force, plus the further four to be bought in the future, would be those originally destined for the UAE.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One drone that had already been delivered to the UAE could now be returned for delivery to the Italian Air Force.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The source said \u20ac70 million (U.S. $78 million) will be spent by the Italian Defence Ministry to achieve flight certification for the drones, which is expected to take between 12 and 18 months. Maintenance work and construction of the P180 will also now continue.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The deal will allow a revived Piaggio to avoid layoffs and to find an \u201cindustrial partner,\u201d the Ministry of Economic Development said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That could be Italy\u2019s Leonardo, although CEO Alessandro Profumo this month <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/industry\/2019\/04\/19\/leonardo-shows-interest-in-taking-over-drone-maker-piaggios-engine-work\/\" target=\"_blank\">told Defense News<\/a> he was only
