Gen. James Dickinson<\/a> has been nominated to become the deputy commander of the new <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/space\/2019\/06\/04\/heres-what-the-first-few-years-of-us-space-command-might-look-like\/\" target=_blank>U.S. Space Command,<\/a> sources have confirmed to Defense News.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Congressional Record shows Dickinson has been nominated for a position but does not specify what that position is.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He will serve under <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/space\/2019\/03\/26\/air-forces-top-space-officer-tapped-to-lead-us-space-command\/\" target=_blank>Air Force Gen. Jay Raymond<\/a>, who breezed through his confirmation hearing in June and was subsequently confirmed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Dickinson has led Space and Missile Defense Command since 2017, directing the creation and implementation of the Army\u2019s air &amp; missile defense strategy, which was released in March. He\u2019s also held senior roles at U.S. Strategic Command, the Missile Defense Agency and on the Army staff. He commanded two Army air and missile defense commands and is a 1985 graduate of Colorado State University.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/defensenews\/digital-show-dailies\/global-force-symposium\/2019\/03\/27\/army-debuts-new-missile-defense-strategy-to-address-emerging-threats\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/32068590097_29a14b56bc_k.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">Army debuts missile defense framework in move to counter drones, hypersonic threats<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">The Army has released its new air and missile defense strategy that aims to pursue multimission units and counter emerging threats like drones and hypersonic missiles.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In his current job, he wears two hats as the commander of Strategic Command\u2019s Joint Functional Component Command for Integrated Missile Defense, coordinating all missile defense planning and operations support around the world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">During his tenure at SMDC, he\u2019s overseen a transformation in the Army\u2019s missile defense forces, as the service is expanding their air and missile defense capacity, while adding new technology to the service\u2019s arsenal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">During an August 6 speech at the Space and Missile Defense Symposium in Huntsville, Alabama, Dickinson led with a hefty dose of the Army\u2019s role in space and how that mission is expanding. Typically, the Army is focused on its missile defense mission and outsiders are rarely aware of its space mission.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Dickinson highlighted the Army\u2019s space capabilities such as missile warning, command, control and communications, friendly force tracking, situational awareness and position, navigation and timing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He emphasized the Army\u2019s space training kits that simulate a denied, degraded and disruptive space operational environment and the deployment around the globe of those serving in the 1st Space Brigade based in Colorado Springs, Colorado.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But he also made a broader pitch in his speech, advocating for space-based missile defense sensors that would help defeat complex threats \u201cfrom cradle to grave&#8221; and noted that the newly stood-up Space Development Agency would be dedicated to building a Low-Earth Orbit (LEO) constellation leveraging the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency\u2019s Black Jack program.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/defensenews\/land\/2017\/05\/09\/lasers-in-combat-new-space-and-missile-defense-commander-on-what-s-to-come\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"201\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/mfix-high-energy-mobile-demonstrator.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">Lasers in combat: New Space and Missile Defense commander on what&#8217;s to come<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">The Army\u2019s future air-and-missile defense capabilities are taking shape under the newest Space and Missile Defense commander, Lt. Gen.
