The disclosure marks the first time the Pentagon has discussed its provision of high-speed anti-radiation missiles to Ukraine in detail.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cUkraine has successfully employed these missiles. They have successfully integrated them onto Ukrainian aircraft. And this enables Ukraine to seek and destroy Russian radars,\u201d a senior defense official told reporters. The Pentagon provided the official for comment on condition of anonymity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Pentagon is sending 15 ScanEagles \u2015 a small, long-endurance, low-altitude drone made by Insitu and used for reconnaissance, which is intended to help guide targeting for Ukrainian artillery. The system is co-produced by Norway\u2019s Kongsberg Defence and Aerospace as well as the American firm Raytheon Technologies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The aid comes days after the U.S. announced it\u2019s sending<a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/news\/pentagon-congress\/2022\/08\/08\/us-to-send-ukraine-another-1-billion-in-military-aid\/\" target=\"_blank\"> $1 billion in military aid to Ukraine<\/a>. That aid included more Guided Multiple Launch Rocket System ammunition for the 16 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/pentagon\/2022\/08\/01\/biden-to-send-ukraine-ammo-for-himars-as-kyiv-congress-push-for-more\/\" target=\"_blank\">M142 High Mobility Artillery Rocket Systems, or HIMARS, provided by the U.S.<\/a> so far.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">While the Pentagon hasn\u2019t seen Ukrainian forces use HIMARS to retake a significant amount of territory, they have pounded and weakened Russian positions. \u201cYou\u2019re seeing this hollowing out of the Russian forces in Ukraine, but with implication for their longer-term sustainability,\u201d the defense official said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The announcement comes after Russia and Ukraine accused each other of shelling Europe\u2019s largest nuclear power plant in Zaporizhzhia, stoking international fears of a catastrophe on the continent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe are very concerned about military operations at or near any of new Ukraine\u2019s nuclear power facilities and are very concerned about any reports of damage to specifically the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant\u2019s power lines,\u201d the defense official said. \u201cWe\u2019ve been very clear that fighting near a nuclear power plant is dangerous, is irresponsible. And we want the fighters and Russia to operate with extreme caution and conduct no actions that would result in a potential radiological release.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The new package is part of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/congress\/2022\/05\/10\/house-to-vote-on-40-billion-ukraine-aid-package\/\" target=\"_blank\">$40 billion in security and economic assistance <\/a>passed by Congress and signed into law in May.
