{"id":35478,"date":"2022-08-19T22:43:57","date_gmt":"2022-08-19T22:43:57","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/c4isrnet\/uncategorized\/2022\/08\/19\/us-air-force-picks-five-companies-to-prototype-next-gen-engines\/"},"modified":"2026-08-08T00:40:24","modified_gmt":"2026-08-08T00:40:24","slug":"us-air-force-picks-five-companies-to-prototype-next-gen-engines","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/c4isrnet\/industry\/2022\/08\/19\/us-air-force-picks-five-companies-to-prototype-next-gen-engines\/","title":{"rendered":"US Air Force picks five companies to prototype next-gen engines"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">WASHINGTON \u2014 The U.S. Air Force on Friday awarded contracts worth a total value of about $4.9 billion to five companies to develop prototypes of an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/air\/2022\/08\/16\/advanced-engine-industrial-base-at-risk-of-collapse-air-force-says\/\" target=\"_blank\">adaptive engine<\/a> for its next-generation fighter jets.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The service awarded General Electric of Cincinnati, Ohio; Pratt &amp; Whitney of East Hartford, Connecticut; Boeing of St. Louis, Missouri; Lockheed Martin of Palmdale, California; and Northrop Grumman of Palmdale, California, each an indefinite delivery, indefinite quantity contract worth up to $975 million to carry out the prototype phase of the Next Generation Adaptive Propulsion program, according to the Defense Department.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The awards mark a broadening of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/air\/2022\/07\/15\/the-f-35-engine-is-at-a-crossroads-with-billions-of-dollars-for-industry-at-stake\/\" target=\"_blank\">adaptive engine market<\/a>, which until now was dominated by GE Aviation and Raytheon Technologies-owned Pratt &amp; Whitney. Those companies were developing engines under the Adaptive Engine Transition Program, which the Air Force pursued as a way to produce a new replacement engine for the F-35 Joint Strike Fighter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Air Force said work on these prototype engines \u2014 including design, analysis, rig testing, prototype engine testing and weapon system integration \u2014 is expected to conclude by July 2032.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Adaptive engines of the kind under development by Pratt &amp; Whitney and GE Aviation use advanced technologies like a third stream of air to improve fuel efficiency, thrust and range.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Air Force Secretary Frank Kendall told lawmakers in April an adaptive engine, if used in the F-35, would offer substantially increased power that would allow it to operate modernized capabilities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Air Force\u2019s decision came about a week after service officials expressed concern that not replacing the F-35\u2032s engine with an adaptive version <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/air\/2022\/08\/16\/advanced-engine-industrial-base-at-risk-of-collapse-air-force-says\/\" target=\"_blank\">could lead to the collapse<\/a> of the advanced
