{"id":35707,"date":"2022-08-18T11:30:00","date_gmt":"2022-08-18T11:30:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/c4isrnet\/uncategorized\/2022\/08\/18\/the-us-army-digs-a-new-sandbox-for-its-laser-weapons\/"},"modified":"2026-08-08T00:31:05","modified_gmt":"2026-08-08T00:31:05","slug":"the-us-army-digs-a-new-sandbox-for-its-laser-weapons","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/c4isrnet\/battlefield-tech\/2022\/08\/18\/the-us-army-digs-a-new-sandbox-for-its-laser-weapons\/","title":{"rendered":"US Army digs new sandbox for laser weapons"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">HUNTSVILLE, Ala. \u2014 The U.S. Army opened the doors of a one-stop shop for development and integration of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/opinion\/commentary\/2022\/03\/02\/winning-21st-century-wars-requires-directed-energy-capabilities\/\" target=\"_blank\">directed-energy capabilities<\/a> at Redstone Arsenal in Huntsville, Alabama, last week as the Space and Missile Defense Symposium kicked off in the same town.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Directed Energy Systems Integration Laboratory, or DESIL, will help speed up and streamline laser weapons research and development as the Army seeks to incorporate the technology into combat systems.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Simulation, component and subsystem testing, and verification and validation of overall systems can all take place in one lab at a single location, Lt. Gen. Dan Karbler, the head of the Army\u2019s Space and Missile Defense Command, told Defense News in an interview at the symposium. The lab\u2019s capabilities will help reduce technical and schedule risk for programs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But it\u2019s not just a lab: Beyond two huge garage doors is a 400-meter outdoor range with an enormous mound of earth at one end that will serve as a test range. The mound serves as a backstop to absorb the laser energy in testing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Karbler, who previously led Army Test and Evaluation Command, said labs like DESIL will help shorten the process of evaluating, developing and testing new capabilities before fielding.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI just go right out, I test it, and then I get to analyze the results right away and fix it right away versus going out to the range, maybe doing something, but then I have to bring it all back or ship all the [hardware] back. And then I own the range time,\u201d Karbler said. \u201cSo it\u2019s going to be a much tighter circle, tighter timeline, from concept, subcomponent, component system testing, analysis, regression analysis to retesting if needed.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Army is outfitting its <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/land\/2022\/01\/13\/army-readies-to-deliver-first-set-of-strykers-with-50-kilowatt-laser-weapons\/\" target=\"_blank\">Stryker combat vehicle with a 50-kilowatt laser<\/a> for short-range air defense, and it is scaling up laser capability to deliver a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/digital-show-dailies\/ausa\/2021\/10\/12\/lockheed-plans-to-pitch-air-defense-laser-weapon-in-future-army-competition\/\" target=\"_blank\">300-kilowatt laser on heavy trucks <\/a>as part of its <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/land\/2021\/08\/24\/heres-who-the-us-army-has-tapped-to-build-an-enduring-capability-to-counter-drones-and-cruise-missiles\/\" target=\"_blank\">Indirect Fires Protection Capability <\/a>that will use a variety of effects to neutralize drones, cruise missiles, rockets, artillery and mortar threats.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/defensenews\/land\/2021\/08\/18\/northrop-bows-out-of-competition-to-build-laser-weapon-for-strykers\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/Stryker-MMHEL-comp-26.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">Northrop bows out of competition to build laser weapon for Strykers<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">A Northrop Grumman team competing to integrate a 50-kilowatt laser onto a Stryker combat vehicle ran into issues ahead of a combat shoot-off this summer, which resulted in an early exit from the program.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The service also recently announced it would work to put a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/digital-show-dailies\/smd\/2022\/08\/11\/this-infantry-squad-vehicle-is-getting-a-laser-to-destroy-drones\/\" target=\"_blank\">20-kilowatt laser on a small Infantry Squad Vehicle <\/a>to defeat small drone threats on the move.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Many of the industry members helping the Army with these efforts are based in the Huntsville area, including Lockheed Martin and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/land\/2021\/06\/04\/dynetics-unveils-enduring-shield-its-solution-for-the-us-armys-future-cruise-missile-defense-capability\/\" target=\"_blank\">Leidos-owned Dynetics<\/a>. The Army\u2019s Rapid Capabilities and Critical Technologies Office, which focuses on directed-energy development, is also based in town.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The new lab will serve as the place where all future laser weapon technology experiments can \u201cbecome reality,\u201d Nicole Olbricht, chief of the systems integration division under Space and Missile Defense Command\u2019s Technical Center, told Defense News during a tour of the facility.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cHuntsville is kind of the center for the Army right now for this,\u201d Olbricht said. \u201cSo we\u2019re essentially co-located with the customers, with the developers, the testers, with the integrators.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Redstone will be the home for project offices like those of the Directed Energy-Short Range Air Defense system and the IFPC program currently in development.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The laser analysis team will also share space with the lab. The Army was breaking ground on the next-door facility while Defense News toured the DESIL digs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cPrior to firing the laser downrange, the laboratory engineers will be able to define the quality of the laser system beam\u201d by firing a laser into an instrumentation system, capturing data and evaluating results, Olbricht explained. (Photo courtesy of the U.S. Army)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Some of the capabilities that allow for indoor laser testing include the Robust Electric Laser Initiative that is capable of multi-kilowatt firing and helps prepare the lab to ensure laser instrumentation is ready.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Army\u2019s lab also houses a system called SMASH \u2014 or Small Measurement and Analysis System for High-energy laser systems. \u201cSMASH measures the thermal properties and optics effects after the laser is fired for a short period of time,\u201d Olbricht said. \u201cFrom the results delivered from the shot profile, SMASH analysis can create a basis of beam quality.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Another key piece of equipment in the lab is the High Power Laser Beam Dump, which absorbs \u201cextremely high amounts of energy for a long period of time,\u201d Olbricht said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The system includes components capable of circulating 120 gallons of water per minute. The water is heated through the laser firing process and returns to a water tank through a closed-loop system that cools the water and purifies it through reverse osmosis. Impurities in the water can \u201clead to catastrophic events for the system during laser tests,\u201d Olbricht explained.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The lab was constructed as a minor military construction project, costing less than $6 million to build, an Army spokesperson told Defense News.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The lab will be sustained \u201con a reimbursable basis in that the Directed Energy programs and related organizations pay a small reimbursable use fee to utilize the capabilities when required,\u201d the spokesperson
