{"id":36308,"date":"2023-03-28T18:04:52","date_gmt":"2023-03-28T18:04:52","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/c4isrnet\/uncategorized\/2023\/03\/28\/vibrations-caused-another-f-35-engine-to-fail-before-texas-mishap\/"},"modified":"2026-08-08T00:52:50","modified_gmt":"2026-08-08T00:52:50","slug":"vibrations-caused-another-f-35-engine-to-fail-before-texas-mishap","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/c4isrnet\/industry\/2023\/03\/28\/vibrations-caused-another-f-35-engine-to-fail-before-texas-mishap\/","title":{"rendered":"Vibrations caused another F-35 engine to fail before Texas mishap"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">WASHINGTON \u2014 An F-35 engine failed during a pre-delivery test due to a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/air\/2023\/03\/02\/pentagon-orders-engine-vibration-fix-for-entire-f-35-fleet-worldwide\/\" target=\"_blank\">vibration problem<\/a> in March 2020, nearly three years before a similar issue caused an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/air\/2023\/02\/10\/fix-coming-for-f-35-engine-problem-that-froze-fighters-deliveries\/\" target=\"_blank\">alarming fighter mishap<\/a> in Fort Worth, Texas, Defense News has learned.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The F-35 Joint Program Office and Pratt &amp; Whitney, the Raytheon-owned <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/air\/2023\/03\/13\/pentagon-rethinks-f-35-engine-program-will-upgrade-f135\/\" target=\"_blank\">maker of the F135 engines<\/a> that power the F-35, said in a statement to Defense News that Pratt \u201cimmediately informed the JPO\u201d after the 2020 vibration failure occurred.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The next day, experts from Pratt &amp; Whitney, the JPO, and the military services that fly the F-35 began a \u201cfull systems engineering investigation\u201d to find the root cause of the problem and \u201cdevelop a path forward,\u201d the JPO and Pratt &amp; Whitney said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">After the four-month investigation, the experts decided the engines needed \u201cadditional pre-acceptance procedures\u201d to test and screen them and, when necessary, take action to mitigate any vibration issues that were discovered.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">However, a problem with engine vibrations \u2014 which the JPO and Pratt &amp; Whitney refer to as \u201charmonic resonance\u201d \u2014 also led to a pre-delivery F-35B\u2019s mishap on Dec. 15, 2022. That F-35 was videotaped as it bounced on the ground and spun around before its pilot ejected safely.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The mishap led to a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/air\/2023\/02\/24\/pentagon-approves-f-35-engine-deliveries-after-vibration-fix\/\" target=\"_blank\">halt in deliveries of new F135 engines<\/a> and the grounding of newly-made F-35s, which resulted in a halt of Lockheed Martin\u2019s F-35 deliveries. An investigation subsequently found a vibration issue in the engine caused its fuel tube to fracture, Pratt &amp; Whitney said in February.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The JPO and Pratt &amp; Whitney said that the engine from the December mishap had undergone and passed the testing, screening and mitigation procedures that were put in place after the March 2020 engine failure, but \u201cthe event in 2022 introduced new learning that manifested for the first time during flight operations.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">By February, the military and Pratt &amp; Whitney developed a near-term fix that allowed engine deliveries to Lockheed\u2019s F-35 factories to resume later that month. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/air\/2023\/03\/06\/lockheed-martin-resumes-f-35-flights-with-engine-vibration-fix-in-hand\/\" target=\"_blank\">Fighter deliveries also resumed<\/a> March 14.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That fix was an \u201cinterim mitigation\u201d solution that allowed aircraft to fly again, the JPO and Pratt said in Monday\u2019s statement, but was not a permanent fix. The JPO and Pratt said \u201ca fully redesigned component\u201d should be ready to roll out to all F-35s worldwide this summer \u201cto further mitigate issues from harmonic resonance.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Pratt &amp; Whitney did not previously disclose to the public the prior failure of an engine, though the company acknowledged other vibration incidents.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Jen Latka, Pratt &amp; Whitney\u2019s vice president of F135 programs, told reporters in a Feb. 28 conference call that the company had previously \u201cdealt with resonance before on the engine,\u201d but that the Dec. 15 incident involved \u201cnew aspects.\u201d Latka offered no details on previous incidents in that call, citing the ongoing investigation, and referred questions to the JPO.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The JPO and Pratt &amp; Whitney refused to comment on financial responsibility for the engine vibration problem and the delivery tumult that ensued.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Pentagon announced as part of this month\u2019s budget rollout that it had decided to stick with the F135 engines in the F-35 and upgrade them for more power and cooling to handle additional capabilities planned for the fighter in coming years. The military also considered, but rejected as too expensive, another engine being developed by General Electric Aviation that would have used an adaptive engine design.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The March 2020 engine failure led to an investigation into the vibration problem.
