{"id":37800,"date":"2024-12-06T22:13:00","date_gmt":"2024-12-06T22:13:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/c4isrnet\/uncategorized\/2024\/12\/06\/defense-tech-firms-establish-ai-focused-consortium\/"},"modified":"2026-08-08T01:06:04","modified_gmt":"2026-08-08T01:06:04","slug":"defense-tech-firms-establish-ai-focused-consortium","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/c4isrnet\/artificial-intelligence\/2024\/12\/06\/defense-tech-firms-establish-ai-focused-consortium\/","title":{"rendered":"Defense tech firms establish AI-focused consortium"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Palantir and Anduril, two leading defense technology firms, announced today they\u2019re creating an industry consortium to address what they see as hurtles impeding the Defense Department\u2019s adoption of AI.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cOur goal is to deliver the technological infrastructure, from the edge to the enterprise, that can enable our government and industry partners to transform America\u2019s world-leading AI advancements into next-generation military and national security capabilities,\u201d the companies said Friday in joint statement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Both firms are key players in the Pentagon\u2019s AI and software ecosystem. Palantir builds platforms to analyze and distill data and Anduril develops a range of advanced hardware and software systems largely centered on autonomy and AI. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The companies are teamed <a href=\"https:\/\/www.c4isrnet.com\/artificial-intelligence\/2024\/03\/06\/army-chooses-palantir-to-build-next-generation-targeting-system\/\" target=\"_blank\">on the Army\u2019s Tactical Intelligence Targeting Access Node<\/a> program, an integrated, AI-defined targeting system set to begin fielding over the next two years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Palantir also provides the core software enabling the Army\u2019s data platform that supports leaders across the force to provide overall visibility and support rapid decision-making \u2014 a contract it\u2019s had since 2017. The Army uses it for unit readiness, managing combat power, logistics and installations and even recruiting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Anduril, meanwhile, is providing hardware and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/pentagon\/2024\/11\/20\/pentagon-picks-programmers-to-connect-its-replicator-drone-swarms\/\" target=\"_blank\">software for the Pentagon\u2019s Replicator initiative<\/a>, which aims to field thousands of small, networked drones by next August.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For this new partnership, the companies will build on existing product lines, including Palantir\u2019s AI Platform, AIP, and Anduril\u2019s Menace, a software-defined command and control system.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The goal is to address two key problems they see as inhibiting the U.S. military\u2019s adoption of AI: data readiness and the lack of a secure pipeline for scaling industry\u2019s AI models.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">To get after the second problem, the team plans to use AIP to deliver a cloud-based data management capability that can deliver AI data at all classification levels. They also plan to combine Palantir\u2019s Maven Smart System with Anduril\u2019s Lattice software to provide \u201ca seamless operational capability\u201d for developing and fielding new AI tools across the defense enterprise.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThis platform is already in place and in use by Anduril and Palantir for their own corporate purposes, and with government contracts that enables this work to begin immediately,\u201d the companies said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The plan is ultimately to grow the partnership to include more firms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">News of the consortium comes amid announcements of several other industry collaborations involving the two companies. Anduril said Thursday <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/pentagon\/2024\/12\/05\/anduril-openai-join-to-boost-counter-drone-tech-for-us-bases-troops\/\" target=\"_blank\">it would team with ChatGPT-maker OpenAI<\/a> to use AI algorithms to improve the military\u2019s counter-drone capabilities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And Palantir announced today it is joining forces with Booz Allen Hamilton to advance defense innovation among U.S. allies. That partnership focuses on modernizing defense infrastructure and using data-centric tools to improve collaboration among partner nations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h1 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Maintaining tech competition<\/h1>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Two U.S. senators this week, meanwhile, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.warren.senate.gov\/newsroom\/press-releases\/warren-schmitt-introduce-bipartisan-bill-to-encourage-resiliency-competition-in-dod-procurement-of-ai-cloud-computing-tools\" target=\"_blank\">introduced legislation<\/a> that calls for the Defense Department to implement guardrails to maintain competition for major technology development programs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The bill \u2014 championed by Sen. Elizabeth Warren, D-Mass, and Sen. Eric Schmitt, R-Mo. \u2014 targets DOD\u2019s AI and cloud computing programs, portfolios that it says are dominated by a handful of Silicon Valley companies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cRight now, all of our eggs are in one giant Silicon Valley basket. That doesn\u2019t only stifle innovation, but it\u2019s more expensive and it seriously increases our security risks,\u201d Warren said in a statement. \u201cOur new bill will make sure that as the Department of Defense keeps expanding its use of AI and cloud computing tools, it\u2019s making good deals that will keep our information secure and our government resilient.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.warren.senate.gov\/imo\/media\/doc\/one-pager_-_protecting_ai_competition_in_defense.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">Specific provisions in the bill<\/a> include a requirement that DOD conduct an open competition for any AI or data integration programs with annual contracts worth at least $50 million. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It would also direct the Pentagon\u2019s Chief Digital and AI Office to ensure that any government data used to build or operate the military AI tools be secured and protected \u2014 particularly if it\u2019s being stored alongside vendor data.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><i>Land warfare reporter Jen Judson contributed to this
