{"id":38278,"date":"2026-02-26T16:47:00","date_gmt":"2026-02-26T16:47:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/c4isrnet\/uncategorized\/2026\/02\/26\/once-reluctant-germany-goes-big-on-one-way-attack-drones\/"},"modified":"2026-08-08T01:32:33","modified_gmt":"2026-08-08T01:32:33","slug":"once-reluctant-germany-goes-big-on-one-way-attack-drones","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/c4isrnet\/unmanned\/2026\/02\/26\/once-reluctant-germany-goes-big-on-one-way-attack-drones\/","title":{"rendered":"Once-reluctant Germany goes big on one-way attack drones"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">COLOGNE, Germany \u2014 The German government plans to equip its military forces with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/air\/2026\/02\/03\/pentagon-taps-25-firms-for-small-cheap-attack-drone-competition\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"\" title=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/air\/2026\/02\/03\/pentagon-taps-25-firms-for-small-cheap-attack-drone-competition\/\">one-way attack drones<\/a>, setting up three domestic manufacturers for deals that could reach billions of euros.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Lawmakers on the parliamentary budget committee on Feb. 25 approved contracts worth \u20ac268 million ($316 million) each for startups Stark Defence and Helsing to supply the Virtus and HX-2 loitering munitions, respectively. Contractual options could add \u20ac1 billion to each of the deals, provided the systems prove technologically mature and lawmakers agree to additional purchases.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A third offer by defense giant Rheinmetall is expected for budget committee consideration within weeks and will receive the same spending plan, according to Andreas Schwarz, budget committee member and point man for the Social Democratic Party (SPD) in defense budget matters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe want to treat everybody equally,\u201d Schwarz told Defense News.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Rheinmetall announced last week the successful demonstration of its FV-014 loitering munition to a \u201cpotential NATO customer\u201d at a range in Germany.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Having three manufacturers on tap means defense leaders and lawmakers are in a position to guide the future flow of money to the most capable offerings, Schwarz said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Loitering munitions are designed to fly to a general target area, stay airborne above it and automatically propose strike targets to human operators a safe distance away. The target selection process happens by way of on-board sensor data collection and analysis, supported by artificial intelligence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When cleared for attack, the drones lock on to a target and try to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/unmanned\/2025\/12\/04\/centcom-launches-new-suicide-drone-attack-force-in-middle-east\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"\" title=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/unmanned\/2025\/12\/04\/centcom-launches-new-suicide-drone-attack-force-in-middle-east\/\">ram their warhead<\/a> into it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The deadly technology is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/global\/europe\/2026\/02\/24\/we-dont-have-infantry-ukraines-war-machine-evolves-into-machine-war\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"\" title=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/global\/europe\/2026\/02\/24\/we-dont-have-infantry-ukraines-war-machine-evolves-into-machine-war\/\">so effective in the war in Ukraine<\/a> that large stretches of the front line are no-go areas for human soldiers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The German parliament agreeing to spend large sums on these types of weapon is part of a remarkable turnaround for the European country\u2019s military posture since Russia\u2019s full-scale invasion of Ukraine four years ago. Previously, lawmakers, including in the SPD, were wary of allowing the military to install weapons of any kind on drones.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe have to adapt to the realities that exist in the world,\u201d Schwarz told Defense News.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As a first step, the three German manufacturers\u2019 weapons are destined to equip Germany\u2019s armored brigade in Lithuania in 2027.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Speed in fielding the new weapons is of the essence for German military leaders. Having soldier testing and training happening in parallel rather than sequentially is meant to save time, according to a defense ministry statement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Such an approach typically increases risk in defense acquisitions, especially when fielding novel technology.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That\u2019s why lawmakers attached reporting requirements to the approved spending plan, designed to keep a close watch on the progress. Cancellation clauses also enable the government to walk away from offerings if manufacturers fail qualification tests.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Meanwhile, manufacturer Stark Defence has managed to assuage lawmakers\u2019 concerns about the involvement of libertarian U.S. investor Peter Thiel in the company.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thiel\u2019s shares in Stark amount to a one-digit percentage, which means he has no access or insight into the startup\u2019s operative business, Defense Minister Boris Pistorius told reporters on Wednesday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Pistorius and Schwarz said they were content with have a written commitment to that effect from the company.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ahead of the budget committee vote, critics said Thiel\u2019s touch could make the Stark deal iffy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe fact is that Peter Thiel openly rejects our democracy. We do not know how large his influence at Stark is. And even worse: The federal government cannot explain it,\u201d Greens lawmaker Jeanne Dillschneider was quoted as saying <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.eu\/article\/peter-thiel-ties-put-major-german-military-drone-deal-shaky-ground\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"\"
