they were involved in a drone attack on a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/flashpoints\/2017\/12\/11\/putin-declares-victory-on-visit-to-air-base-in-syria\/\" target=_blank>Russian air base in Syria<\/a> earlier this year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Russian Deputy Defense Minister Alexander Fomin said Thursday that 13 drones were heading toward <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/flashpoints\/2018\/01\/11\/whose-drones-did-the-russian-military-capture-in-syria\/\" target=\"_blank\">Khmeimim air base<\/a> in Syria\u2019s coastal<a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/flashpoints\/2018\/08\/14\/kurds-meet-with-syrian-government-to-discuss-self-rule-as-assad-demands-us-troops-withdraw\/\" target=\"_blank\"> Latakia province<\/a> when a U.S. Navy P-8 Poseidon flying over <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/flashpoints\/2018\/08\/29\/russias-navy-building-up-in-mediterranean-nato-says\/\">the Mediterranean<\/a> took \u201cmanual control\u201d of them and began searching for \u201choles through which they started penetrating.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThen they were destroyed,\u201d Fomin said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">American officials flatly denied the accusation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cAny suggestion that U.S. or coalition forces played a role in an attack on a Russian base is without any basis in fact and is utterly irresponsible,\u201d a Pentagon spokesperson said in a statement to Military Times.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/militarytimes\/flashpoints\/2018\/10\/25\/russia-claims-us-aircraft-took-control-of-drones-in-attempted-attack-on-syrian-base\/\" control of drones in attempted attack on its Syrian base<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">Russia\u2019s deputy defense minister claimed Thursday that a U.S. military aircraft took control of 13 drones over Syria and attempted to have them attack a Russian military base there, but the drones were downed before they could reach their target.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Rob Lee, a former U.S. Marine Corps officer and doctoral candidate who focuses on Russian defense policy at King\u2019s College London, said the allegations are dubious.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;It is sometimes hard to tell which claims Russian officials believe and which are merely rhetoric,\u201d he said. \u201cSometimes it is easier just to blame the Americans than acknowledge that they were not prepared to stop unsophisticated, off-the-shelf UAVs \u2014 which was particularly embarrassing because of how much they publicized the effectiveness of their air defense systems.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">While U.S. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marinecorpstimes.com\/news\/your-marine-corps\/2018\/07\/20\/the-corps-wants-15-suicide-drones-swarming-from-the-hands-of-one-front-line-marine\/\" target=\"_blank\">research toward drone swarms<\/a> is definitely underway, the allegation that the U.S. attacked a Russian air base with the technology, risking an escalation with a peer adversary seems unlikely.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"955\" height=\"537\" class=\"wp-element-caption\">(Russian Defense Ministry)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Russia has reported numerous rudimentary drone attacks by militants in Syria since the January incident.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In September, Russia Defense Ministry spokesman Igor Konashenkov told <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kommersant.ru\/doc\/3732866\" target=_blank>Kommersant<\/a>, a Moscow-based newspaper, that a Russian airstrike targeted \u201cwarehouses of terrorists with unmanned aerial vehicles.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He added that 47 drones were destroyed around Khmeimim air base in the previous month.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cOf course, they improved their defenses after the January attack, and began focusing on stopping UAVs,\u201d Lee said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One reason the deputy defense minister gave for accusing the U.S. of controlling the drones was that the swarm supposedly switched to manual guidance after encountering Russia\u2019s electronic countermeasures.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This indicated that they were not controlled by militant forces, he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a military capture in Syria?<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">The Russian Defense Ministry had referred to the &quot;strange coincidence&quot; of a US military intelligence plane allegedly barraging over the Mediterranean near the Russian bases when the drone attack took place.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cOnly a technologically advanced country has access to such tools; they cannot be made in the Syrian desert,\u201d the deputy defense minister said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In January, Russian President Vladimir Putin said that while the drones looked primitive, they contained high-tech elements allowing precision satellite guidance and the release of munitions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Lee is unconvinced. If the allegations against the U.S. military were truthful, it would be counter-intuitive for Russia to publicize that their base defenses were penetrated by American drones and they took no retaliatory action in response.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;After the firefight between pro-regime forces, including contractors from the Russian private military company Wagner, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/flashpoints\/2018\/02\/13\/reports-russian-contractors-killed-by-us-strike-in-syria\/\" target=_blank>U.S. forces in February<\/a>, they were very quick to emphasize that the Russian government had no role in [the attack] to prevent any kind of escalation,\u201d Lee said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Khmeimim air base was purpose-built for the Russian air force in 2015. The airstrip is capable of landing large transport planes, as well as bombers, fighters and helicopters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Putin announced this summer that an agreement was reached with Syrian President Bashar al-Assad to allow Russian forces to remain at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/flashpoints\/2018\/07\/27\/russias-probably-not-leaving-syria-anytime-soon-heres-why\/\" target=\"_blank\">Khmeimim for another 40 years<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As to whether the U.S. is even capable of sophisticated drone swarm attacks at this point, that remains unclear.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1920\" height=\"1080\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/MUT-2.jpg.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-2557\" srcset=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/MUT-2.jpg.jpg 1920w, https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/MUT-2.jpg.jpg?resize=300,169 300w, https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/MUT-2.jpg.jpg?resize=768,432 768w, https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/MUT-2.jpg.jpg?resize=1024,576 1024w, https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/MUT-2.jpg.jpg?resize=1536,864 1536w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1920px) 100vw, 1920px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Airbus demonstrated the ability to control a swarm of five company-built drones from a manned aircraft over the Baltic Sea in October 2018.
