{"id":9653,"date":"2022-03-03T23:43:51","date_gmt":"2022-03-03T23:43:51","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/c4isrnet\/uncategorized\/2022\/03\/03\/us-air-force-not-concerned-about-russias-decision-to-halt-rocket-engine-sales-support\/"},"modified":"2026-08-07T20:06:04","modified_gmt":"2026-08-07T20:06:04","slug":"us-air-force-not-concerned-about-russias-decision-to-halt-rocket-engine-sales-support","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/c4isrnet\/battlefield-tech\/2022\/03\/03\/us-air-force-not-concerned-about-russias-decision-to-halt-rocket-engine-sales-support\/","title":{"rendered":"US Air Force not concerned about Russia\u2019s decision to halt rocket engine sales, support"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">WASHINGTON \u2014 The secretary of the U.S. Air Force said Thursday he\u2019s not concerned about Russia\u2019s decision to cut off the United States\u2019 access to more RD-180 rocket engines.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI have not been informed at this point of any major launch concerns associated with that,\u201d Frank Kendall told reporters during a media roundtable at the Air Force Association\u2019s Air Warfare Symposium.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The head of Roscosmos, Russia\u2019s space agency, said Thursday the country would no longer sell the RD-180 to the U.S. or provide support for launches powered by the Russian-made engine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIn a situation like this we can\u2019t supply the United States with our world\u2019s best rocket engines,\u201d Dmitry Rogozin said in an appearance on Russian state television, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/russia-halts-deliveries-rocket-engines-us-2022-03-03\/\" target=\"_blank\">Reuters reported<\/a>. \u201cLet them fly on something else, their broomsticks, I don\u2019t know what.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The United Launch Alliance \u2014 one of two launch providers certified to fly national security space launches \u2014 carries the RD-180 on its Atlas V rocket, which the company is set to retire in 2025. The company has said it has enough engines on hand to power the remaining scheduled Atlas V launches.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Asked to respond to Rogozin\u2019s threats, which began on Twitter earlier this week, ULA CEO Tory Bruno said the company has \u201cdeveloped considerable experience and expertise\u201d to troubleshoot any unexpected engine issues without help from Russia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The United States has in recent years weaned itself from the RD-180, developing an assured access to space strategy to invest in domestic launch vehicle suppliers and ensure at least two companies are certified to launch national security space payloads. The new strategy was driven by a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/digital-show-dailies\/space-symposium\/2017\/04\/03\/as-rd-180-ban-looms-space-companies-make-steady-progress-on-new-launch-technologies\/\" target=\"_blank\">2016 congressional directive<\/a> to eliminate reliance on the Russian-made propulsion system by 2022.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Since then, the Air Force has introduced competition into its space launch program, certifying military space launch newcomer SpaceX to fly national security missions and awarding the company, along with long-time provider ULA, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.c4isrnet.com\/battlefield-tech\/space\/2020\/08\/07\/spacex-and-ula-win-massive-national-security-launch-contracts\/\" target=\"_blank\">a five-year contract for launch services<\/a> through fiscal 2027. The service has also invested in domestic launch vehicle development, providing early funding for ULA\u2019s Atlas V replacement, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/air\/2015\/04\/13\/ula-unveils-vulcan-launch-vehicle\/\" target=\"_blank\">the Vulcan Centaur.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Despite some recent schedule setbacks, ULA plans to fly Vulcan for the first time this year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Kendall noted that the purpose of DoD\u2019s strategy \u2014 which he played a significant role in crafting in his former role as Pentagon acquisition chief \u2014 was to eliminate dependencies on Russia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe whole point of the program we put in place several years ago was to work our way off of the RD-180,\u201d he said. \u201cOther suppliers like SpaceX, for example, have come on board. ULA is moving towards a different solution that doesn\u2019t involve the [RD-180].
