{"id":9942,"date":"2020-12-16T15:54:49","date_gmt":"2020-12-16T15:54:49","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/c4isrnet\/uncategorized\/2020\/12\/16\/artoo-take-the-wheel-the-u-2-flew-for-the-first-time-with-an-ai-copilot\/"},"modified":"2026-08-07T21:27:32","modified_gmt":"2026-08-07T21:27:32","slug":"artoo-take-the-wheel-the-u-2-flew-for-the-first-time-with-an-ai-copilot","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/c4isrnet\/artificial-intelligence\/2020\/12\/16\/artoo-take-the-wheel-the-u-2-flew-for-the-first-time-with-an-ai-copilot\/","title":{"rendered":"Artoo, take the wheel: U-2 spy plane flies for the first time with an AI co-pilot"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">WASHINGTON \u2014 In Star Wars, Luke Skywalker destroys the Death Star with the adorable, wisecracking droid named R2-D2 in the back of his X-wing, helping navigate and fix the ship in real time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Now, the U.S. Air Force has its own Artoo \u2014 called, well, Artu\u03bc \u2014 an artificial intelligence system <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/air\/2017\/12\/08\/one-u-2-squadron-wants-to-be-the-silicon-valley-of-the-air-force\/\" target=_blank>that flew onboard a Lockheed Martin U-2<\/a> for the first time Dec. 15 and was given control of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/air\/2018\/01\/04\/with-u-2-safe-operators-vie-for-greater-investment\/\" target=_blank>the spy plane\u2019s radar and sensor systems<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On a reconnaissance training mission conducted out of Beale Air Force Base in California, Artu\u00b5 was tasked with finding adversarial missile launchers during a simulated missile strike, and it was solely responsible for sensor employment and tactical navigation after takeoff, the Air Force said in a news release.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The human U-2 pilot, referred only by the callsign \u201cVudu\u201d for security reasons, concentrated on finding enemy aircraft and shared the use of the radar with the AI co-pilot.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cLike any pilot, Artu\u03bc (even the real R2-D2) has strengths and weaknesses,\u201d Air Force acquisition executive Will Roper <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/WILLROP3R\/status\/1339209367262904320\" target=_blank>tweeted <\/a>in an announcement of the news. \u201cUnderstanding them to prep both humans and AI for a new era of algorithmic warfare is our next imperative step. We either become sci-fi or become history.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Artu\u00b5 was created by the U-2 Federal Laboratory, which in October successfully <a href=\"https:\/\/www.c4isrnet.com\/air\/2020\/10\/09\/the-air-force-updated-the-software-on-one-of-its-oldest-aircraft-while-it-was-in-the-air\/\" target=_blank>updated the plane\u2032s software<\/a> while it was flying \u2014 a first for the U.S. military. The event was made possible by deploying Kubernetes, an open-source, containerized method for automating software updates.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Artu\u03bc is based on a gaming algorithm known as \u00b5Zero, which has been used to beat human players in chess and Go, Roper explained<a href=\"https:\/\/www.popularmechanics.com\/military\/aviation\/a34978872\/artificial-intelligence-controls-u2-spy-plane-air-force-exclusive\/\" target=_blank> in an op-ed on Popular Mechanics<\/a>. The U-2 lab specially trained the AI co-pilot to manipulate the U-2\u2032s sensor suite during \u201cover half a million\u201d computer-simulated missions, according to the Air Force.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWith no pilot override, ARTU\u00b5 made final calls on devoting the radar to missile hunting versus self-protection,\u201d Roper wrote.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Although Artu\u00b5 was developed to take away from the pilot\u2019s workload in a U-2, it can be modified for use by other combat planes, the service said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe know that in order to fight and win in a future conflict with a peer adversary, we must have a decisive digital advantage,\u201d Air Force Chief of Staff Gen. Charles Q. Brown said in a statement. \u201cAI will play a critical role in achieving that edge, so I\u2019m incredibly proud of what the team accomplished.
