<p class="wp-block-paragraph">In May, acting Navy Secretary Hung Cao announced during a Senate Armed Services Committee Hearing that the MQ-25A was moving into the low-rate initial production and <a href="https://www.navytimes.com/industry/techwatch/2026/08/05/firestorm-labs-builds-drones-aboard-uss-essex-without-shore-resupply/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer" title="https://www.navytimes.com/industry/techwatch/2026/08/05/firestorm-labs-builds-drones-aboard-uss-essex-without-shore-resupply/">deployment</a> phase.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The <a href="https://www.defensenews.com/news/your-military/2026/05/19/mq-25a-stingray-cleared-for-deployment-says-cao/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer" title="https://www.defensenews.com/news/your-military/2026/05/19/mq-25a-stingray-cleared-for-deployment-says-cao/">aircraft</a> is intended to relieve the Navy’s F/A-18 Super Hornets of the aerial refueling role, freeing up F/A-18E/F aircraft to focus on strike missions.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The memo, dated April 21, 2026, was recently published by the Pentagon within a <a href="https://www.esd.whs.mil/Records-Declass/FOIA/Reading-Room/Reading-Room-List_2/Selected_Acquisition_Reports/PB_2027_MSARs/" target="_blank" rel="">Modernized Selected Acquisition Report</a>. It was first reported by <a href="https://www.twz.com/air/uss-theodore-roosevelt-is-the-first-carrier-with-a-drone-control-center-ready-for-mq-25-stingray-ops" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer" title="https://www.twz.com/air/uss-theodore-roosevelt-is-the-first-carrier-with-a-drone-control-center-ready-for-mq-25-stingray-ops">The War Zone</a>. </p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><a href="https://www.esd.whs.mil/Portals/54/Documents/FOID/Reading%20Room/Selected_Acquisition_Reports/PB_2027_MSARs/MQ-25_MSAR_FY2027_PBv2.pdf" target="_blank" rel="">The report notes</a> that in March 2026, the USS Theodore Roosevelt Unmanned Air Warfare Center “became the first fully operational/deployable MQ-25 capable aircraft carrier,” with another UAWC aboard the aircraft carrier USS Ronald Reagan slated “to be operational/deployable at the end of [August] 2026.”</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The Nimitz-class carrier USS George H.W. Bush was the first aircraft carrier on which the <a href="https://www.usff.navy.mil/Press-Room/News-Stories/Article/4015510/first-mq-25-unmanned-air-warfare-center-installed-aboard-bush/" target="_blank" rel="">UAWC was installed and tested</a> back in August 2024. </p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><a href="https://www.usff.navy.mil/Press-Room/News-Stories/Article/4015510/first-mq-25-unmanned-air-warfare-center-installed-aboard-bush/" target="_blank" rel="">According to the Navy,</a> the integrated Unmanned Carrier Aviation Mission Control System and the MD-5E Ground Control Station are the systems required for the MQ-25 air vehicle command and control — and are critical to the unmanned aircraft refueler’s operations.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">In May, the Stingray reached milestone C, which in the defense acquisition process authorizes a program to transition from the engineering and manufacturing development, or EMD, phase into production and deployment, a process that in this instance has been nearly eight years in the making.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Inked in 2018, the $805 million Boeing-Navy contract covered the design, development, fabrication, test and delivery of four Stingray aircraft, a program that the service at the time estimated would cost about $13 billion for 72 aircraft, according to previous <a href="https://www.defensenews.com/naval/2018/08/30/us-navy-selects-builder-for-new-mq-25-stingray-aerial-refueling-drone/" target="_blank" rel="">Military Times</a> coverage.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">With the USS Theodore Roosevelt in the fold and able to support MQ-25 operations, deploying the unmanned refueling drone is seemingly only a matter of time. </p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The potential cost of the Navy’s new nuclear-powered battleship procurement program is estimated to be an eyewatering $275 billion, with the first Trump-class battleship (BBG(X)) costing $23.4 billion, according to a Congressional Budget Office <a href="https://www.cbo.gov/publication/62644" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer" title="https://www.cbo.gov/publication/62644">report</a> published Wednesday.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The Trump administration in December announced its intention to build a new class of large surface combatants, designated as the Trump-class guided missile battleship. </p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">If built, the 35,000-ton nuclear battleship, according to the report, will be the most heavily armed surface vessel the U.S. Navy has ever built, possessing anti-air, land-attack and anti-ship missiles, hypersonic missiles, nuclear cruise missiles, large lasers and a rail gun. </p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">“If built to those specifications, the ship would be the largest surface combatant in the world and larger than any surface combatant built for the Navy since World War II,” according to the report. “It would be more than three and a half times the size of the Navy’s Arleigh Burke-class guided missile destroyer and more than twice the size of the Zumwalt-class guided missile destroyer.”</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The Navy projects that between 2028 and 2056 it will build 15 Trump-class guided missile battleships, with the subsequent 14 costing $18 billion each. By contrast, the USS Gerald R. Ford, the U.S. Navy’s premier nuclear-powered aircraft carrier, <a href="https://www.navytimes.com/news/your-navy/2026/04/23/us-navy-is-reviewing-cost-of-future-ford-class-carriers-to-ensure-they-make-sense/" target="_blank" rel="">cost approximately $13.3 billion</a>.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">By 2058, the total tonnage of “large surface combatants to be constructed would need to increase by 60 percent,” which the report notes “could be a challenge for the shipbuilding industry.”</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The shift away from small surface combatants would mean that by 2035, shipyards would need to produce 12% greater tonnage under the 2027 plan than under the 2025 version, according to CBO’s estimation. </p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">To keep pace with the service’s aims, the Navy would need to build a battleship about every other year from 2028 to 2056, the report notes, while continuing to produce two DDG-51 destroyers per year.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Last March, the <a href="https://www.militarytimes.com/news/your-military/2025/03/28/us-shipbuilding-in-a-perpetual-state-of-triage-watchdog-says/" target="_blank" rel="">Government Accountability Office</a> released a report detailing nearly two decades of lackluster progress in U.S. shipbuilding. According to the GAO, not enough ships have been built, newly constructed ships are failing to function as expected and ships are being delivered up to three years later than ordered.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">In a statement to the Senate Armed Services Committee, Shelby S. Oakley, a director at GAO, said that unrealistic expectations of costs and timing have diverted resources and introduced delays in shipbuilding, with the result that Navy programs and shipbuilders have been “effectively made to operate in a <a href="https://files.gao.gov/reports/GAO-25-108225/index.html?_gl=1*16hqqsn*_ga*MTM2NDE5MTU0NC4xNzQzMTM2NzY0*_ga_V393SNS3SR*MTc0MzEzNjc2NC4xLjEuMTc0MzEzODExNi4wLjAuMA.." target="_blank" rel="">perpetual state of triage.”</a></p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The report also notes that while the price tag will be immense up front, over time, by switching to nuclear power, it would reduce the battleship’s operating costs by eliminating the need to purchase fuel. The GAO did not provide an estimate of possible savings. </p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Since the December announcement, the cost of Trump-class battleships has been a moving target, with the updated $23.4 billion <a href="https://www.secnav.navy.mil/fmc/fmb/Documents/27pres/SCN_Book.pdf" target="_blank" rel="" title="https://www.secnav.navy.mil/fmc/fmb/Documents/27pres/SCN_Book.pdf">roughly six billion more </a>than the initial Navy projection.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Following the recent announcement that a Saildrone Voyager unmanned surface vehicle directly aided the U.S. Navy during a drug interdiction in the Caribbean that led to the seizure of more than $81 million worth of cocaine, the Navy has awarded the California-based company a $16.3 million task order to extend operations of the Voyager fleet in the Caribbean and Eastern Pacific, <a href="https://www.saildrone.com/news/saildrone-voyager-helps-navy-seize-81-million-usd-cocaine" target="_blank" rel="">according to a recent release</a>.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The extension is in line with the Trump administration’s efforts to curb illicit narcotics flowing into the United States via alleged drug-carrying vessels in the Caribbean Sea and eastern Pacific Ocean.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Since 2023, Saildrone’s USVs have worked in coordination with the U.S. Navy, supporting the Joint Interagency Task Force South (JIATF-S) and U.S. Naval Forces Southern Command/U.S. Navy Fourth Fleet, per the release.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">“The continuity of Saildrone’s presence along the southern border for nearly three years demonstrates the strategic value we bring as the world’s most experienced operators of unmanned surface vehicles,” said Saildrone President VADM (ret.) John Mustin. “Our unmatched ability to remain on station and on mission in critical regions for months at a time is why our fleet serves as a powerful deterrent to bad actors. We look forward to continuing to partner with the Navy in its mission to secure the country’s maritime approaches and southern border.”</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The 33-foot-long Voyager is designed for persistent surface and subsurface surveillance and can also conduct nearshore mapping missions and seafloor characterization, the release states. </p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Able to remain “on mission and on station” for months at a time, the USVs are “both a deterrent and an alarm” along the U.S.’s expansive southern maritime border, according to the company. </p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Since September 2025, the U.S. military has conducted <a href="https://www.militarytimes.com/news/your-military/2025/11/06/a-list-of-us-military-strikes-against-alleged-drug-carrying-vessels/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer" title="https://www.militarytimes.com/news/your-military/2025/11/06/a-list-of-us-military-strikes-against-alleged-drug-carrying-vessels/">strikes against alleged drug-carrying vessels</a> in the Caribbean Sea and eastern Pacific Ocean in support of what the Pentagon has called continued counternarcotics efforts.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">As of June 22, the Trump administration and U.S. military have disclosed 66 strikes, killing at least 196 people.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The U.S. Navy is rapidly advancing its unmanned surface fleet. </p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Just a little over two weeks after U.S. Central Command utilized three Corsair unmanned surface vessels to strike a submarine and ship maintenance facility at the Bandar Abbas naval base in Iran, marking the “first time American forces have employed sea drones in combat operations,” the Navy confirmed its first live-fire training exercise of its Global Autonomous Reconnaissance Craft uncrewed surface vessel.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Two former U.S. warships, the amphibious assault ship USS Peleliu and the cruiser USS Mobile Bay, were sent below the seas off the coast of Hawaii during a live sinking exercise, or SINKEX, event during the biennial Rim of the Pacific exercise.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">On July 24, the Navy released footage of the sinking, including the USV targeting the hull of the USS Peleliu.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Sarah Weinstein, a surface warfare officer currently serving as the first Commanding Officer of Unmanned Surface Vessel Division 32, confirmed that her division, USVDIV-32, was behind the execution of the Navy’s first GARC live fire. </p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">“It was incredible to watch my team execute with precision and we were thrilled to provide a perspective of the former USS Peleliu that often isn’t often captured in a SINKEX,” <a href="https://lnkd.in/p/eYUvEd7s" target="_blank" rel="">the officer wrote on LinkedIn</a>.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The sinking, which took place on July 17, found the GARC at the center of the Peleliu SINKEX. Created by the Baltimore-based <a href="https://www.blacksea.tech/garc" target="_blank" rel="">BlackSea Technologies</a>, the company touts the GARC as the “most proven tactical sUSV on the water.”</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">With a payload capacity of up to 1,000 pound and a range of 700 nautical miles at a speed of 22 knots, BlackSea writes that the 16-foot GARC “combines modular payload flexibility, advanced autonomy, and rugged endurance.” </p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">In addition, operators can control the vessels individually or as a swarm. It’s driven manually or given a target to follow by using radar.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">In August 2025, <a href="https://www.navy.mil/Resources/Fact-Files/Display-FactFiles/Article/4288613/small-unmanned-surface-vehicles-susv-family-of-systems-fos/" target="_blank" rel="">the Navy announced</a> that it was “experimenting with the Global Autonomous Reconnaissance Craft (GARC)” to support naval operations. And just last month, USVDIV-32 utilized the drone boats during Exercise BALTOPS 2026, one of NATO’s premier maritime exercises. </p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">“We are at the beginning and we don’t even know where we’re going to take it yet,” Weinstein told <a href="https://lnkd.in/p/exNuCgA9" target="_blank" rel="">The Wall Street Journal</a> in June. “The GARC originally was designed to kind of do a limited skill set, and we’ve turned it into something that can do escort, that can do surveillance, intelligence, maritime domain awareness, and we’ve already with one platform been able to expand what is in the realm of possible.”</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Now, with its hand in sinking the USS Peleliu, the GARC continues to surpass its testing milestones as it inches its way toward operational deployment. </p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The Pentagon on Thursday nominated Lt. Gen. Kevin D. Admiral to serve as the next commander of the U.S. Army Europe and Africa theater. </p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Admiral, who currently serves as the commander of III Corps and Fort Hood, Texas, could take over the top job from Gen. Christopher Donahue, who unexpectedly <a href="https://www.militarytimes.com/news/your-military/2026/06/24/gen-christopher-donahue-to-unexpectedly-relinquish-command-of-army-europe-and-africa/" target="_blank" rel="" title="https://www.militarytimes.com/news/your-military/2026/06/24/gen-christopher-donahue-to-unexpectedly-relinquish-command-of-army-europe-and-africa/">relinquished</a> command earlier this month after only 18 months in the role. Since Donahue’s exit, Maj. Gen. Christopher Norrie has been serving as acting commander.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">If confirmed, Admiral would also serve as commander of NATO’s Allied Land Command, coordinating with 104 countries in USAREUR-AF’s area of responsibility. He would remain a three-star, despite the role previously being a four-star position. </p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Prior to leading III Corps and Fort Hood, Admiral served as the commanding general for the 1st Cavalry Division out of Fort Hood, Texas, and in Poland, and director of force management in the Office of the Deputy Chief of Staff, G-3/5/7, according to his official <a href="https://www.gomo.army.mil/public/Biography/usa-10635/kevind-admiral" target="_blank" rel="">Army bio</a>.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Donahue’s early July departure came amid the Pentagon’s broad senior leadership changes under Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, who in April <a href="https://www.militarytimes.com/news/pentagon-congress/2026/04/02/hegseth-asks-armys-top-general-to-retire-immediately-as-iran-war-rages/" target="_blank" rel="" title="https://www.militarytimes.com/news/pentagon-congress/2026/04/02/hegseth-asks-armys-top-general-to-retire-immediately-as-iran-war-rages/">asked</a> U.S. Army Chief of Staff Gen. Randy George to step down and retire ahead of the typical four-year term.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Since taking office, Hegseth has removed more than a dozen senior military leaders, including former Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Gen. C.Q. Brown and former Chief of Naval Operations Adm. Lisa Franchetti.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The declaration came during the christening of the Department of Transportation’s fourth national security multi-mission vessel — Lone Star State — which will be used to train the next generation of merchant mariners at Texas A&amp;M Maritime Academy, according to a U.S. Department of Transportation release. </p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The shipyard, in collaboration with TOTE Services, has delivered four NSMVs to the department’s Maritime Administration. A fifth is scheduled to be delivered in 2027. </p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">TOTE Services will be on hand to serve as the vessel construction manager for the building of the two MRIV vessels, according to Hanwha’s release.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The shipyard, a subsidiary of the South Korean Hanwha Group, was selected to build the new missile-tracking vessels set to replace the aging Pacific Tracker and Pacific Collector, which were constructed in 1965 and 1970, respectively, according to the shipyard’s release.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The two ships, working on behalf of the Missile Defense Agency, monitor and collect data on ballistic missile tests in the Pacific Ocean. The first MRIV, dubbed the “Golden Defender,” is slated to be delivered in June 2030 and will also support President Donald Trump’s <a href="https://www.militarytimes.com/news/pentagon-congress/2026/05/12/trumps-golden-dome-missile-shield-estimated-to-cost-12-trillion/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer" title="https://www.militarytimes.com/news/pentagon-congress/2026/05/12/trumps-golden-dome-missile-shield-estimated-to-cost-12-trillion/">Golden Dome</a> missile defense system, Vought said during the ceremony. </p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">“It is thus my honor to announce the awarding of a contract to build the newest Missile Range Instrumentation Vessel ‘Golden Defender’ right here in Philadelphia under the combined management of Hanwha Philly and TOTE Services as the vessel construction manager,” Vought said. “This new ship will not only support the President’s policy of restoring America’s Maritime Dominance, but also support the President’s ‘Golden Dome’ missile defense system over the entirety of our nation. Golden Defender will serve the Missile Defense Agency in this mission.”</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">U.S. Central Command utilized three Corsair unmanned surface vessels to strike a submarine and ship maintenance facility at the Bandar Abbas naval base in Iran, marking the “first time American forces have employed sea drones in combat operations,” CENTCOM <a href="https://x.com/CENTCOM/status/2076679617440530442" target="_blank" rel="" title="https://x.com/CENTCOM/status/2076679617440530442">confirmed on X</a> on Monday. </p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The latest round of strikes by the U.S. comes after it revoked a license on July 7 that allowed Iran to sell oil. U.S. President Donald Trump declared the ceasefire between the two nations — which began on April 8 — to be over, but ceded that Iran had agreed to continue to negotiate. </p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The U.S. military said it hit dozens of Iranian military targets on Sunday, which included the first-ever combat use of Corsair USVs to assist in degrading Iran’s ability to continue to attack commercial shipping through the Strait of Hormuz. </p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Built by Saronic, the Corsair is a 24-foot USV that has a range of over 1,000 nautical miles and a payload capacity of 1,000 pounds while surging at 35 knots. </p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">According to the company, “it supports a variety of missions including ISR, surface surveillance, and logistics in both permissive and contested environments. Its embedded AI stack and open architecture allow rapid integration of sensors and autonomy software, making it a flexible platform for modern naval and defense applications.”</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">While it is the USVs first display in combat, the U.S. Navy has been testing and utilizing Corsair vessels for various missions over the past two years. </p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Just last month, two soldiers were <a href="https://defensescoop.com/2026/06/09/autonomous-maritime-drone-rescues-apache-pilots-after-crash/" target="_blank" rel="">picked up by a Navy-operated Corsair USV</a> after their Army AH-64 Apache helicopter crashed during a patrol operation near the Strait of Hormuz.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The unique mission marked the first publicized use of the craft outside of testing. </p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">“The surface drone that assisted in last night’s rescue of the Apache crew off the coast of Oman was a U.S. Navy Corsair unmanned surface vessel operated by U.S. 5th Fleet’s Task Force 59,” Capt. Tim Hawkins, a U.S. Central Command spokesperson, said in a statement in June. “The Task Force began fielding these drones in theater in late March.”</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">In January 2024 the Navy stood up <a href="https://www.navy.mil/Press-Office/News-Stories/Article/3645647/task-force-59-launches-new-unmanned-task-group-591/" target="_blank" rel="">Unmanned Task Group 59.1</a>, nicknamed “The Pioneers,” to focus on the deployment of unmanned systems in maritime operations teamed that can be teamed with specialized operators to “bolster maritime security across the Middle East region,” according to a press release. </p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Unmanned Task Group 59.1 is under the aegis of Task Force 59 in the U.S. Fifth Fleet Area of Operations. </p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">At the time, Lt. Luis Echeverria, the commanding officer of the Navy’s Bahrain-based Pioneers, was assigned to “stress-test” unmanned surface vessels. </p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">According to previous <a href="https://www.militarytimes.com/news/your-military/2025/04/11/inside-the-navy-task-group-testing-drone-boats-in-the-red-sea/" target="_blank" rel="">Navy Times</a> reporting, a handful of unmanned vessels were launched from Aqaba, Jordan, into the <a href="https://www.navytimes.com/news/your-navy/2025/03/27/second-aircraft-carrier-on-the-way-to-join-fight-against-houthis/" target="_blank" rel="">Red Sea</a> with a broad-edged surveillance mission: to observe the “pattern of life” in the region and increase maritime domain awareness.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">With the latest Corsair attacks on the Iranian port, that mission has shifted to incorporate strikes.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">U.S. Marines on Guam recently fired the service’s new Medium-Range Intercept Capability system, representing the validation of the Corps’ first medium-range air defense system since the divestment of the service’s legacy <a href="https://www.marines.mil/News/News-Display/Article/3473524/back-to-the-future-mric-and-the-rebirth-of-the-corps-air-defense-capability/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer" title="https://www.marines.mil/News/News-Display/Article/3473524/back-to-the-future-mric-and-the-rebirth-of-the-corps-air-defense-capability/">HAWK</a> platform in the 1990s. </p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The ongoing Exercise Valiant Shield became the proving ground for III Marine Expeditionary Force personnel, as Marines at Camp Blaz successfully used the MRIC to intercept an aerial target on June 30, 2026. </p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The MRIC is a “significant leap in operational capability,” a service release stated. The system bridges the gap between the shoulder-fired Stinger Man-Portable Air Defense System and the long-range Patriot missile system and is designed for the “expeditionary nature of Marine Corps operations.”</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Deployed via trailers carrying 20 interceptors each, MRIC systems can down targets from two to 43 miles away.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The deployment of the system allows Marines to provide an “air defense umbrella” that moves with Marine forces as they maneuver inside an enemy’s weapons engagement zone, all while defending critical assets like expeditionary air bases, runways and forward arming and refueling points, according to a service release. </p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">In 2023, the <a href="https://www.marines.mil/News/News-Display/Article/3473524/back-to-the-future-mric-and-the-rebirth-of-the-corps-air-defense-capability/" target="_blank" rel="" title="https://www.marines.mil/News/News-Display/Article/3473524/back-to-the-future-mric-and-the-rebirth-of-the-corps-air-defense-capability/">service announced</a> that it would incorporate technology from Israel’s Iron Dome system to help furnish the Corps with its first medium-range air defense system in decades.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">According to the service’s <a href="https://www.marines.mil/Portals/1/Docs/Force_Design_Update-October_2025.pdf" target="_blank" rel="">Force Design 2030</a>, three batteries of MRIC are slated to be fielded by 2028. </p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">“Before the MRIC, we were primarily a short-range air defense capability,” Maj. Emi Gutierrez, commander of the firing battery, said in the release. “The Marine Corps employed the Stinger for years, but that capability is significantly different. With the evolution of air defense weapon systems, we saw a need to adapt.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">“Our ability to rapidly insert and fill critical gaps within an integrated air defense system is critical not only to the Marine Corps but also the joint force as a whole,” Gutierrez continued. “The MRIC fits into expeditionary warfare perfectly because of its ability to be rapidly deployed.”</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The U.S. Navy’s decommissioned Austin-class amphibious transport dock ship USS Juneau (LPD-10) was sent to the ocean floor during the ongoing Valiant Shield exercise taking place from June 22 to July 1.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Sunk more than 200 nautical miles off the coast in the Mariana Islands Range Complex, the death knell to the Juneau came from a torpedo strike from a Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force submarine.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">“This SINKEX provided an outstanding opportunity for our joint team to integrate capabilities across domains, honing the lethal precision and coordination essential for high-end maritime operations in the Pacific theater,” said <a href="https://www.dvidshub.net/news/568861/multilateral-joint-forces-execute-sinking-exercise-during-valiant-shield-2026" target="_blank" rel="">Rear Adm. Eric Anduze</a>, commander of Carrier Strike Group 5 and Task Force 70.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Valiant Shield involving the U.S., Japan, Australia, Canada and New Zealand is a biennial field training that builds real-world proficiency in sustaining joint forces through detecting, locating, tracking and engaging units at sea, in the air, in space, on land and in cyberspace, <a href="https://www.cpf.navy.mil/Newsroom/News/Article/4523327/allies-come-together-in-the-indo-pacific-valiant-shield-26/" target="_blank" rel="">according to the Navy</a>.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The SINKEX of the USS Juneau comes nearly 84 years after the first USS Juneau, CL-52, was infamously sunk by a Japanese torpedo during the Guadalcanal campaign in November of 1942. Upon contact with the torpedo from Japanese submarine I-26, the Juneau exploded and sank within minutes. Only 10 crew members survived the attack — and among those lost were the <a href="https://www.history.navy.mil/our-collections/photography/us-people/s/sullivan-brothers.html" target="_blank" rel="">five Sullivan brothers</a>. As a result of their loss, according to Naval History and Heritage Command, the U.S. Navy barred close relatives from serving onboard the same ship.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Juneau (LPD-10) entered service in 1969, seeing action in the Vietnam War and Operation Desert Storm. It was decommissioned in 2008 and was moored in Naval Sea Systems Command Inactive Ships On-Site Maintenance Office at Pearl Harbor before being used by the U.S. and its allies as a means to gain proficiency and confidences in their weapons systems that can not be duplicated in simulations. </p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><a href="https://www.navyleaguehonolulu.org/sinkex.html" target="_blank" rel="">According to the Navy</a>, prior to the sinking of any vessel for participation in a SINKEX, each vessel is put through a rigorous cleaning process, “including the removal of all liquid polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) from transformers and large capacitors, small capacitors to the greatest extent practical, and all trash, floatable materials, mercury or fluorocarbon-containing materials, and readily detachable solid PCB items. Petroleum is also cleaned from tanks, piping, and reservoirs.”</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">In addition, a Navy environmental, safety and health manager and a quality assurance supervisor are on hand to inspect the environmental remediation conducted.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The Trump administration’s recent push to buy foreign-built warships is being waylaid by congressional defense committees who are seeking to limit the executive office’s ability to tap overseas construction yards to build out America’s naval fleet.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">First reported on by the U.S. Naval Institute, the Senate Armed Services Committee’s markup of the Fiscal Year 2027 defense policy bill seeks to strip the presidential waiver authority granted to the commander-in-chief in <a href="https://uscode.house.gov/view.xhtml?req=granuleid:USC-prelim-title10-section8679&amp;num=0&amp;edition=prelim" target="_blank" rel="">Title 10 section 8679</a>, which would allow the president to approve offshore ship construction under a vague description of “national security interest.”</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Under the language of the markup, the defense secretary may arrange to “construct not more than two vessels for each class of covered vessels in a[n] [allied] foreign shipyard.”</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">“Covered vessels” listed within the bill’s language include only bulk fuel vessels and roll-on/roll-off ships.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Stipulations for such ships include the defense secretary determining — with evidence — that such a construction “is in the national security interests of the United States.”</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Within 30 days of a construction deal with an Allied nation, the Pentagon must submit a report that aligns with the congressional stipulations, as well as the identification of the vessels to be built and “a description of the enforceable provisions that will govern the protection of classified information and controlled unclassified information” during the foreign construction process. </p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Additional requirements include “all critical mission systems, command and control equipment, and secure communications systems are installed in the United States or a secure allied facility; the vessels are projected to be constructed and delivered faster than if the vessels were constructed at a shipyard in the United States, or construction at a foreign shipyard otherwise provides a material benefit to readiness or force posture.”</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The limitations put forth in the draft version of the National Defense Authorization Act were rolled out after the Trump administration <a href="https://www.navytimes.com/news/your-navy/2026/05/12/us-navy-open-to-building-ships-overseas-new-plan-says/" target="_blank" rel="">revealed its designs to tap foreign shipyards</a> to design and build U.S. Navy combatant ships. </p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Touting it as the “Finland model,” the expansion of auxiliary naval ships built from allied shipbuilders mirrors the push to expand the Coast Guard’s icebreaker fleet, solidified in the 2024 ICE Pact — a trilateral agreement between the United States, Canada and Finland to combine collective knowledge, resources and expertise to produce Arctic and polar icebreakers, according to the Department of Homeland Security.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">“Those can follow the ICE Pact model where they’ll build up to two overseas, which would be concurrent with foreign direct investment into U.S. yards for subsequent ships to be brought, including their supply chain, and other guardrails,” a Senate Majority official told the U.S. Naval Institute last Thursday.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Overall, the service aims to increase its number of ships dramatically, according to President Donald Trump’s proposed $1.5 trillion fiscal 2027 defense budget.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">There are currently over 290 battle force ships, though the number, according to Navy requirements by law, is 355, the document stated. The service intends to have 395 vessels in fiscal 2027 and 450 vessels by the end of fiscal 2031.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Currently, only 10% of shipbuilding is taking place at distributed sites. The service wants to increase that number to 50% to increase flexibility, reduce reliance on legacy shipyards and accelerate delivery.</p>
