Marines are set to launch a 3-D-printed drone into combat zones in the coming weeks, reports 3D Printing Industry. The drone, nicknamed the “Nibbler,” is the first drone of its kind to be used in a combat theater by conventional forces.

The Nibbler’s simple design is comprised of a few prefabricated components including a motor, batteries and a spool of filament. The body of the drone is printed using 3-D technology.

“Our team is very enthusiastic about the Nibbler, but even more enthusiastic about what it represents for the future,” Capt. Chris J. Wood told Defense Systems.

U.S. Marines with II Marine Expeditionary Force assemble the Nibbler drone.

Photo Credit: Lance Cpl. Taylor N. Cooper/Marine Corps

Marines have embraced the technology — they view it as compatible with the “adapt and overcome” mentality of the Marine Corps.

“Imagine being in a forward deployed environment, and just like Amazon, you can ‘order’ the weapons and equipment you need for the next day’s mission from an entire catalog of possible solutions,” Wood said to Defense Systems. “These solutions can all be upgraded literally overnight, in order to integrate new components or adapt to new requirements. On a very small scale, Nibbler shows us that this is possible right now with the group 1 UAS family of systems.”

WASHINGTON — The German Air Force has sent a written request for classified data from the U.S. military on the F-35 fighter jet, reported Reuters.

Germany, which is preparing to replace its aging fleet of fighter jets, has not authorized a procurement plan, nor has it committed to a specific platform to replace its fourth-generation warplanes. The letter noted that the Defence Ministry would hold “an in-depth evaluation of market available solutions, including the F-35, later this year.”

Germany may be aiming to bolster its hand in negotiations with its European partners over the development of the next generation of European warplanes. Despite the potential resistance by labor unions if Germany were to purchase the American-made fighters, military sources say buying the F-35 could make sense for Germany given both steady declines in the cost of the U.S. jet and technical challenges with the Eurofighter aircraft.

Key NATO allies of Germany — Britain, the Netherlands, Norway, Turkey and Italy — are already purchasing the F-35 to replace their own dated fleets, and other European countries are also reportedly considering purchasing the F-35.

“In order to understand (the) F-35’s cutting-edge technologies, the German Air Force is requesting a classified brief of the F-35’s capabilities in general and especially concerning sensor suites, information management and operational capabilities,” the letter read.

Since Germany is not part of the international consortium that developed the F-35, the U.S. government must approve the request for classified data. The F-35 program office in the Pentagon said it received the letter and is “working to support the German Air Force request.”

WASHINGTON — U.S and Slovenian special operations forces participated in joint combined exchange training, or JCET, exercises to train the Serbian anti-terrorism unit in Belgrade, Serbia, according to the U.S. Defense Department.

Specijalna Antiteroristicka Jedinica, the Serbian anti-terrorism unit also known by the acronym SAJ, worked with U.S. and Slovenian forces to enhance the tactical and technical capabilities of the unit from April 3-30.

“Our special operations detachment is in Serbia to facilitate this JCET event with the SAJ,” a detachment commander for the 1st Battalion, 10th Special Forces Group said. “They handle internal threats, high-level criminals and escorting VIPs within Serbia.”

Serving as the special operations arm of the Serbian police, the SAJ specializes in urban operations. The JCET provided the SAJ with the opportunity to train in a rural environment — a skill set necessary to combat the growing threat of terrorism in Serbia’s rural areas.

“A lot of the criminals are located inside Belgrade, but they are finding safe haven out in the woods,” the U.S. commander said. “We want to teach the SAJ the ability to target, recon a house or compound in a rural environment and perhaps set up a raid, while teaching them the rules associated with that. You go there to show a positive presence, that the police are here to clean up, not add to the mess.”

The chief of the Office of Defense Cooperation at the U.S Embassy in Serbia has reported that tension between political groups in the Balkans has raised security concerns in and around the European country, according to U.S. Army Lt. Col. Corey Shea.

Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., visited the SAJ headquarters on April 10 to observe the training.

“As I travel through Southeastern Europe, my message is simple: the United States’ commitment to a Europe whole, free and at peace, is ironclad,” McCain said in a news release. “I hope future cooperation like this will deepen our security relationship and help to enhance the Serbian military’s interoperability with U.S. forces.”

Following last week’s U.S. cruise missile strike against Syria’s al-Shayrat air base, the U.S. has moved to bolster force protection measures for American troops in the region.

U.S officials determined it necessary to take the extra precautions to safeguard operations in Syria, according to a report from Reuters.

A U.S. military spokesman said the U.S. commander for the campaign in Iraq and Syria, Army Lt. Gen. Stephen Townsend, has been “calling in the resources that he needs” to protect U.S. forces considering the increased tensions following the strikes.

Defense officials declined to specify exactly what protection measures were taken.

The 59 Tomahawk missiles that struck al-Shayrat incapacitated a fifth of Syria’s operational aircraft and sent a clear warning to Damascus, according to Defense Secretary James Mattis.

“The Syrian government would be ill-advised ever again to use chemical weapons,” Mattis said in a statement.

The U.S. launched the strike in response to a chemical weapons attack that killed at least 87 people in the Syrian town of Khan Sheikhoun near the Turkish border on Apr. 4. The U.S. strike marked the first time the U.S. has directly targeted Syrian President Bashar al-Assad’s forces in six years of civil war.

In response to the U.S. strike, Russia’s deputy United Nations ambassador, Vladimir Safronkov, told the U.N. Security Council that Russia’s Defense Ministry had “stopped its cooperation with the Pentagon,” reports The Hill.

Russia indicated that they had suspended the “deconfliction line” which allowed the U.S. and Russia to keep their military actions from colliding. The Pentagon disputed this claim, saying it is still able to communicate with Moscow, although it wouldn’t say how.

Syria, Iran, and Russia issued a joint statement condemning the strikes, reports Iran’s semi-official Fars News Agency. Russia and Iran warned the U.S. that they will respond with military force in the wake of further attacks.

“We will respond to any aggression powerfully, as Russia and Iran would never allow the U.S. to dominate the world,” the statement said on Sunday.

In line with the joint statement, a group of Russian Navy ships is headed to the eastern Mediterranean, a U.S. defense official told USNI News. The ships, including two Steregushchiy-class corvettes, will join the guided missile frigate Admiral Grigorovich off the coast of Syria. The Steregushchiy-class corvettes are capable of fielding the Russian Kalibir NK long-range land attack cruise missiles, which have a range similar to that of U.S. Tomahawks. Russian forces have used the missiles against Syrian rebels in Aleppo.

The group of Russian ships and Admiral Grigorovich departed their homeports following the launch of 59 Tomahawk missiles from U.S. guided missile destroyers Ross and Porter. Ross and Porter are part of the U.S. Navy’s forward deployed destroyer force based in Rota, Spain. The ships primarily focus on regional ballistic missile defense. but they have also been utilized for presence operations.

Forward deployed U.S. ships in the Mediterranean accelerated the U.S. response to the April 4 attack, Pentagon officials said.

“These platforms provide an option for the leadership for a measured and deliberate strike. That’s their value,” Capt. Paul Stader said. “[Tomahawks] are very short notice and are capable of executing within a very tight timeline.”

Despite the cruise missile strikes on al-Shayrat, U.S. officials said that the primary focus remains the defeat of the Islamic State.

WASHINGTON — The release of unredacted, classified information is drawing questions in Canada, reports CBC News.

The classified documents disclosed details of Canada’s military response procedures in the event of a 9/11-style terror attack. The material was part of a briefing given to Gen. Jonathan Vance, Canada’s chief of defense staff in 2015.

One of the security measures outlined in the document permits fighter jets to shoot down a hijacked commercial airliner in order to protect the CN Tower in Toronto.

The document also explains who is authorized to make such a decision, rules of engagement, the locations of fighter jets on standby and the time it would take to scramble the aircraft. CBC chose not to disclose some contents of the documents for national security purposes.

The Canadian military has been under fire for internal investigations pertaining to the “loss or compromise” of classified information. Additionally, the second-highest ranking military commander in Canada, Vice Adm. Mark Norman, was suspended after being accused of leaking classified information.

“In this case, it sounds to me like a mistake was made,” Vance told CBC on Wednesday. “We’ll follow up and try and make certain that this sort of thing doesn’t happen again.”
